Hi there,
Could anyone who has access to Derbyshire parish records please see if they could find a potential marriage for this individual:-

George Alfred Frederic Yeomans, b21 July 1856 in Belper, son of George and Mary (nee Peat). Last known as a single person at the 1871 census (Rg10/3580/23/4.

World War Two / WWII soldier info required
« on: Wednesday 12 March 14 12:26 GMT (UK)  »
I was recently given access to a box of love letters which had been sent to my great aunt who died recently and the age of 102. One series of letters comes from Private Harry Dryden 7365-822. According to my cousins, she spoke of Harry occasionally, but said she didn't know what happened to him. Is there any way of finding out what did happen, particularly seeing as he rather helpfully gave his service number at the top of one letter.

Many thanks

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / YEOMANS, Alfred c1856, Ednaston
« on: Wednesday 08 January 14 10:44 GMT (UK)  »
Please could someone perform a baptism look up for me.

The person is Alfred Yeomans, son of Samuel and Sarah, born c1856 in Ednaston, Derbyshire. Despite multiple GRO purchases I am unable to locate a birth certificate for this individual so I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help me out by going down the parish register route.

Many thanks

Hello,

My MIL has been handed down from her father a Trafalgar Victory Medal in the name of George Hake / Stake, (although to us it looks like Hake).

It got a bit exciting this morning when I looked him up on the Trafalgar Ancestors area of TNA and it actually appears that he saw active service on HMS Victory at Trafalgar as an able seaman. It also indicates he was born in the Hull area c1778.

I would greatly appreciate it if anyone with local knowledge could provide me with birth details, and / or any marriage details if he resettled in the area after his discharge c1809.

many thanks in advance,
Heather

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Barnsley St Helens hospital
« on: Friday 05 April 13 15:15 BST (UK)  »
My mother was recently an in-patient in Barnsley District General Hospital. It was quite an old ward and she was wondering whether any part of the building of BDGH was part of the old St Helen's hospital, and in turn whether any of St Helen's was ever part of the original workhouse (or built on the site)?

many thanks

Glamorganshire Completed Lookups / Glamorganshire canal boatmen
« on: Tuesday 11 December 12 21:44 GMT (UK)  »
I have been researching the family NORMAN from the Nantgarw / Glyntaff / Rydyfelin areas. From the census returns it would appear that the majority of the men are boatmen, probably on the Glamoganshire Canal.

Does anyone have any good resources / info / pointers in the right direction on boatmen and the Glamorganshire Canal?? I believe that there are a couple of good books, The Glamorgan and Aberdare Canals (vols 1 and 2) but at £30 a pop I cannot justify these (even just before Christmas). Does anyone have a copy of these books and know if they have any specific information relating to the Norman family and / or the specific locality.

many thank in advance,
Heather
