Australia / NSW BDM - 1 number for 2 people or 2 names for 1 person?
« on: Monday 06 September 10 15:46 BST (UK)  »
In NSW BDM online I have found births to William Phillips and Bridget (nee Moore) Phillips for two different names with the same registration code:

2717/1856  PHILLIPS  ELIZABETH  WILLIAM  BRIDGET  ALBURY
2717/1856  PHILLIPS  MARY           WILLIAM  BRIDGET  ALBURY

Could somebody please explain to me whether this represents two separate daughters (presumably twins) or whether there is some other possible explanation...

I'm puzzled because family legend has it that there was one daughter, "Mary Elizabeth", who was known as Elizabeth, but I've just located a record (of William's remarriage in 1876) stating that William and Bridget had 5 children, 1 of whom was deceased before 1876, which makes me wonder if Mary and Elizabeth were not one and the same.

Any other information about the above or siblings below would be appreciated:
John (b 1852 Mullengandra),
Alfred (b 1853 Yass,  V18532147 70),
William (b 1854 NSW V18543315 72).

Thanks in anticipation,

Giuliana

Cumberland Lookup Requests / William Phillips m Margaret Barnes
« on: Sunday 05 September 10 14:45 BST (UK)  »
William Phillips b abt 1813 Cumberlandshire shows (on marriage cert in Australia in 1876 - 3rd marriage) parents' names as William Phillips and Margaret Barnes.

William Jnr was court-martialled in Dublin in 1837 and arrived in Australia in 1838  (transported for 14 yrs). William Jnr was (1st) married by 1837.

William Jnr's children born in Australia (to his 2nd wife, Bridget Moore) were John, William, Alfred and Mary Elizabeth (known as Elizabeth).

Any assistance in identifying William Phillips Snr and Margaret Barnes Phillips and/or the first wife of William Phillips Jnr would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dublin / Court-martial Phillips 1837
« on: Saturday 21 August 10 23:42 BST (UK)  »
My gggrandfather William Phillips was court-martialled in Dublin on 2 Jan 1837 for deserting the army, and was sentenced to transportation to Australia for 14 years, leaving Dublin on the second voyage of the "Neptune" in Aug 1837.

The sum total of my knowledge of William is that he was "from Cumberlandshire", aged about 25 at the time of his transportation, and "married, no children". Neither he nor his wife petitioned for her to emigrate to Australia.

I can find nothing in the info available online about the court-martial (just name, date and sentence) that gives me any assistance in finding out who William's parents and wife were, exactly where he was born, where he married etc., or even what regiment he was in, which could give links to other records.

If anyone has any suggestions as to how I can climb over this particular brick wall, that would be appreciated.

« on: Tuesday 14 July 09 14:00 BST (UK)  »
I have relatives (names unknown) who are said to have left Kyabram in northern Victoria for Christmas Island abt 1954. Occupations are believed to be plumber and/or school teacher.

Any suggestions for locating immigration records, trade directories etc. that might be useful to try to track down names?

Essex / Newton family of Hornchurch, Brentwood
« on: Sunday 31 May 09 14:28 BST (UK)  »
Seeking information about the ancestry of George Newton (b abt 1781, probably Hornchurch, Brentwood, Essex) and his wife Mary Ann Newell (b abt 1788).

Known children of this couple:
* George Newton b abt 1812 (I have some census info on George and his family to 1881)
* Alfred Newton b abt 1818
* Charles Newton b abt 1822
* Walter (perhaps Walter James?) b abt 1824? (1851 census shown as a seaman, 25, but known to lie about his age, incl on his marriage record in Australia)

Walter (my line) apparently "ran away to sea" when quite young, possibly with his uncle (probably on the Newell side) who was a ship's captain. Reportedly they travelled to India among other places. Walter married Maria McClure in Australia in 1861.

I would like to find out as much as I can about his early life and his roots. Also about the Newells' connection to the sea. (I have records of American-born Newells as ships' captains travelling US - Far East - Australia in the mid 1800s but I haven't established any connection.)

Thanks for anything you can help with.

Armagh / James McClure m Martha Anderson early 1800s
« on: Sunday 31 May 09 11:38 BST (UK)  »
Seeking information on Maria McClure who emigrated from Co Armagh to Australia abt 1859 (aged 19) along with at least one sister, Margaret (b abt 1855). (Possibly a third sister, Mary.)

Family Bible data shows parents as James McClure and Martha Anderson and Maria's birth as 1839, Portadown.

Any assistance re Maria's and her family's life in Ireland would be appreciated.

Argyllshire / John McNicol m Ann Leitch 1854
« on: Monday 25 May 09 14:44 BST (UK)  »
Seeking information on John McNicol and Ann Leitch, who married in Glasgow in October 1854.

John was born 31 October 1834 in Glenorchy, Argyllshire. (Parents' names may be Hugh and Christina.)
Ann was born 29 September 1832 in Glenorchy, Argyllshire.

They travelled to Australia (date unknown but probably 1854-55) perhaps initially to Tasmania (the Leitch family were a pioneer family in Tasmania) but they settled in Victoria and raised their family in the Costerfield area. Both are buried in Heathcote cemetery, Victoria.

Children born to John and Ann (believed to be all born in Australia):  Finley (1855), Archibald (1859), Agnes (1861 & 1863), John (1865), Donald (1868), Christina (1870), and Hugh Duncan (1872).

Details of both John and Ann's parents, siblings, occupations, addresses etc. would be greatly appreciated.

I'm very new to genealogical research but loving it so far and fully expecting to become obsessed ;D

Arthur William Phillips joined the Royal Irish Constabulary in 1920, and the extract of his record shows his year of birth as 1897 and his place of birth as "HERT" and "HET". During WWII he joined the civilian military forces in Australia, and those records show his date of birth as 24 November 1897, place of birth as "England".

I have a copy of his marriage to Josephine Noonan in Abergavenny Register Office on 1 Aug 1922. Witnesses were Frederick Thomas Phillips and Ethel Phillips. His father was named as Frederick Phillips, tailor (deceased).

I am interested to know more about Arthur and his family - parents, siblings etc. - to see if I can trace my roots back further and to learn more about their lives.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, especially given the scant information!

Thanks in anticipation,

Giuliana in Australia
