Technical Help / norton quick scan
« on: Saturday 31 December 11 16:13 GMT (UK)  »
The quick scan comes on the minute my computer comes on. I try to cancel it but it comes back on almost immediately as a result the speed of my computer drops dramatically. Is there any way to disable it ?. I find it so annoying I am considering cancelling my subscription. Is there an anti virus programme that does not have this annoying facility.?

US Lookup Requests / birth in new york
« on: Friday 30 December 11 12:33 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for details of the birth of John Thomas McLelland who was born in New York about 1840/1841. His parents emigrated to the USA from Ireland sometime before 1841. His father was James McLelland but am not sure of his mothers name.
The family lore has it that they returned to Ireland because the mother had Tuberculosis and was not allowed to stay in the USA.  She subsequently died on the return journey.
Any info on this families arrival in and subsequent life in USA would be very welcome. Also the date of departure would be welcome.

Midlothian / hotel in St.Colme Street.
« on: Thursday 10 November 11 16:30 GMT (UK)  »
In the 1911 Scotland Census my great uncle is residing and working as a " Boots " in an hotel in St. Colme Street , Edinburgh. The census return did not give the name of the Hotel. Does anyone know anything about an hotel there ?. I lived in Edinburgh for many years and have never seen an hotel at that address.
I assume that working as a " Boots" meant he cleaned the boots of the guests , is that correct ?.

Armed Forces / discharged for misconduct
« on: Tuesday 17 May 11 13:35 BST (UK)  »
found the army records for my great uncle where it states that he was discharged for misconduct. There is a reference number written beside the note of discharge which is C.R23157/1(A). Does this number give a clue as to the nature of the misconduct. He was serving with RAMC at the time at Edinburgh Castle.

Scotland / pupil at donaldson's school for the deaf
« on: Friday 07 January 11 15:34 GMT (UK)  »
My 3x great grandfather was born in Maxton Roxburghshire in 1846. I can find him in the 1851 census in Roxburghshire and in the 1871 census. However the only record of a Henry Rutherford in the 1861 census is for the deaf school in Edinburgh. His age is correct but his birth place is given as Edinburgh. Does anyone know where I might find the school records to see if there is any clue to his identity or any suggestions as to where he might have gone in 1861.
