Suffolk Lookup Requests / Bury St Edmunds - O'Connor, Noah and Ivy
« on: Monday 24 February 14 21:28 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for descendants of Noah O'Connor, who lived in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, until 1987/1989.

He had a daughter Margaret by a previous relationship, but is known to have married Ivy Lillian Frost in 1974. She sadly died in February 1978, aged just 51.

Noah (who has been seen in records as 'Noam') was about 25 years older than Ivy.

Any information on Noah's previous wife (or wives?) and on Margaret (who is probably now in her 60s, and has children) would be most helpful.

I'm researching this little bit of info for an old school friend, a non-genealogist/family tree fan, and who is the granddaughter of Ivy Frost. As some of these people are more recent than the usual request, feel free to message me privately, rather than post here.

hope you can help
Andrew

Suffolk / Pls help me kill off Mary Clarke/Bailey from Hartismere Union Workhouse
« on: Sunday 10 March 13 23:05 GMT (UK)  »
I've been trying to kill off my Greatx4 Grandmother Mary Bailey (née Clarke) for ages. She was born about 1812 in Botesdale, Suffolk, and after bearing 2 illegitimate children in Wattisfield in 1835 and 1837, she then married widower William Bailey of Botesdale in 1838.

After a term in prison for abusing his children from his previous marriage in 1841, she and their new family ended up in and out of the Hartismere Union Workhouse/Ling House of Industry.

Having become a widow in 1869, by 1881 Mary Bailey is noted as back in the Hartismere Union Workhouse aged 68yrs. After this, i've lost her and have yet to take a gamble on a death certificate.

FreeBMD lists a few entries, but nothing that seems to jump out location-wise.

Here's where she's been:
1841: 29yrs, Ipswich County Gaol and House of Correction, Ipswich, Suffolk, England.
1851: 39yrs, Hartismere Union Workhouse, Eye, Suffolk, England.
1861: 46yrs, Botesdale Street, Botesdale, Suffolk, England.
1871: 60yrs, 20 Back Hills, Botesdale, Suffolk, England.
1881: 68yrs, Hartismere Union Workhouse, Eye, Suffolk, England.

Any advice/ideas would be great.  ???

thanks,
Andrew

Cambridgeshire / A missing Bowers (last seen: Wicken, 1847)
« on: Monday 26 November 12 21:39 GMT (UK)  »
I've been stuck with my Gtx4 Grandfather, Henry Bowers, for a long time and have just re-freshed my determination to crack his origins. I'm wondering whether anyone can offer information or some fresh ideas on this?

What i know...

Henry Bowers married Ann Bailey on 27th October 1832 at Wicken. The couple had 8 children between 1833 and 1846. For whatever reason, there were no Banns recorded at Wicken between 1828 and 1833 (so close!), and the couples' ages and parents names were not noted.

Henry died on 22nd Feb 1847 of consumption in Wicken. His sister-in-law Sarah Bailey was present at his death. He is noted as 35 years old. Going by this date, he would have been born in 1811/1812 (depending on whether his birthday had passed or not, and if his sister-in-law knew his age).

This leaves me with just the 1841 census as a snapshot of his family life, and unfortunately doesn't reveal his parish of birth. The census does give the 'y' for the 'born in this parish' question. It also gives him the age of 29, which given the creativity of that census with ages, seems pretty odd if it wasn't accurate.

What i'm stuck on is...

Where was Henry born? There's no Bowers in the Wicken registers until his marriage to Ann Bailey in 1832. A few Bowers do turn up as the children of 'John' a shoemaker, in marriages either side of the 1851 census, yet John doesn't appear anywhere on the census at this time. There's also no reference to Henry being baptised in nearby Soham, and there are several Bowers in Burwell, but again, no Henry.

Having looked at that 1851 census (when of course, Henry is dead), i've looked to see where other Bowers name-bearers of a similar age were born and it brings up places such as Horseheath, Boxworth, Elsworth - all in Cambridgeshire, and Lakenheath on the Suffolk border. These places are all within 25-37 miles of Wicken, so not exactly next-door compared to all the other relationships i've researched during this period and area.

A fresh set of eyes and mind is gratefully received! :S

Huntingdonshire / Franks - Coppingford (and Upton)
« on: Sunday 13 June 10 12:13 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I've recently started to research my Franks tree after having decided that despite vague descriptions of a birthplace, that the only viable location could be Coppingford.

My ancestor in question was born there with her sister in the 1790s-early 1800s.

I'm aware that the church in Coppingford was destroyed about 100 years before their births and that villagers used the Upton church from that point onwards.

I visited the church yesterday - very picturesque, but found no 19th century gravestones for the family name. I've just noticed too that the Hunts RO says that the church has retained the register.

Has anyone on here ever researched the register? - thought i'd ask before trying to contact the church myself. Or has anyone else stumbled across Franks in this parish?

Suffolk / Hartismere Union - the Ling House of Industry
« on: Monday 02 November 09 18:56 GMT (UK)  »
The 1851 census for Botesdale notes a couple of my relatives as being at the Ling House Of Industry.

Now, whilst I'm aware that this is all likely to be part of the Hartismere Union (as the rest of the family was at Eye Workhouse), I'm just wondering where this House of Industry was.

I don't know Botesdale itself but I can easily visit.. but i've failed to find mention of it on the web - including in Google Books.

I was wondering whether anyone knows where it was/is, as I've located the site of the Eye Workhouse.

Suffolk / BAILEY & CLARKE - Wattisfield/Redgrave area
« on: Monday 17 August 09 17:23 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I've been rummaging through records for a while now for the death (to lead me ultimately to the birth and parents) of Mary Bailey, (née Clarke).

My first acquaintance with her was on 20th July 1835 when she appeared as the mother to the illegitimately born Caroline Clarke (my Gt Gt Gt Grandmother) at Wattisfield, Suffolk.

22nd October 1837 is the next date that i've found her on, when she's once again at Wattisfield's parish church at the baptism of her illegitimate son Edward Jarman Clarke.

On the 8th November 1838 she married widower William Bailey, and that's it.

By the time of the 1841 census, she's gone, leaving behind William Bailey, some children from his first marriage, with Mary's two illegitimate children - Caroline and Edward - and also an Ellis Bailey aged 2.

With such a narrow time frame to examine (8th Nov 1838-6th June 1841) i decided to look through the parish records for Wattisfield and Redgrave with Botesdale for a baptism of Ellis (i'm assuming he is a 'he') and also a burial for Mary Bailey... but there was nothing.

Unfortunately, the Suffolk Records Office at Bury St Edmunds, doesn't hold the original records, just fiche and I couldn't find an index for burials and baptisms... so I'm a bit puzzled.

I *did* find a potential death in the neighbouring district of Thingoe (courtesy of freeBMD):

Deaths Dec 1840
BAILEY    Mary    Thingoe    13    541

but I'm wondering whether I should bite the bullet and just order it?

Perhaps someone reading this has a note of Mary Bailey's death inbetween Nov 1838 and June 1841... or even Ellis' birth around 1839.

I've tried familysearch.org too... but nothing is catching my eye.

What do you reckon?

Hello,

I thought that I would throw these two images your way.

I was going through an old photograph album belonging to an (now late) great aunt who had been helping me with my research into the family and hidden at the back of the album was a negative for two photos. The negatives were clearly made from the photos but after having the shots developed, I ended up with two great pics.

I'd like to know, from your estimates, when you think they were taken.

I can only speculate who they are of (i think i ~know~, looking at some later
photos of ancestors).

Woman 1 http://www.flickr.com/photos/familytreeuk/262952393/

Woman 2 http://www.flickr.com/photos/familytreeuk/262952392/in/photostream/

The Man http://www.flickr.com/photos/familytreeuk/262952387/in/photostream/

Woman 1 and The Man, are likely to be related - i think they are early photos of my gt gt gt grandparents.

The Woman 2, was introduced to me as 'Aunt Tingey' but no idea who she might really be. This photo was card mounted, without date, but I reckon it's around 1880/90s.

I'd love to know what you think  :)

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Clark in Watchfield
« on: Friday 16 January 09 18:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Circa 1834, my Gt Gt Gt Grandmother, Caroline Clark was born.

By 25th May 1855, she was in Mildenhall, Suffolk, marrying Thomas Howlett (my Gtx3 Grandfather) but I have no record of her immediately before the marriage. At the marriage, she names "Alfred Woods" as her father, although deceased.

By 1861 (my first census with her), she states that her place of birth is "Backthen, Norfolk" (I can picture her saying "oooh, back then? - Norfolk". Come 1871 it's just "Suffolk" and in 1881 and 1891, she gives "Watchfield, Norfolk" as her place of birth.

In 1911 she's still saying "Watchfield" but in "Suffolk".

Bearing this in mind, I've looked for Watchfield in Suffolk and Norfolk and there's nowhere that really stands out. I've yet to try "Wattisfield, Suffolk", but it just strikes me that she manages to keep saying "Watchfield".

So, as a longshot, i thought i'd try Watchfield, Oxfordshire. Of the generations of my ancestors, only 3 of them weren't from Cambridgeshire - they rarely travelled... but perhaps Caroline Clark (or should that be Caroline Woods??) did.

I've not been able to find a contender for Alfred Woods - her supposed father either... so any help is much appreciated.

World War One / French Newspaper report from 1917?
« on: Friday 07 November 08 22:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I wonder if anyone can help - or has done this before?

I have a copy of a death certificate for my great grandfather, Herbert Martin, a Private in the Northamptonshire Regiment and he was killed in a railway accident in "Boulogne" on 17th October 1917.

I'd really like to find a French newspaper article that carries the story (if there was one).

Where would be the best place for me to start looking?

(I've already got the UK newspaper copy and it doesn't really say that it was a railway accident - it just lists him as killed during the war).
