Armed Forces / Cup Winners Medal 53rd Welsh
« on: Saturday 26 April 14 14:09 BST (UK)  »
Looking through a box of assorted coins and medals which I found in my parents' home in Chirk I came across a cup winners medal for 1922-23.
The front has the Welsh Dragon with the usual motto and around the top of the rim is
inscribed 53rd (The Welsh) Division and at the bottom ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION.
The back of the medal has ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL at the top of the rim and the centre is inscribed   1922-23 Winners.
Sadly the name of the owner was never inscribed. I have no idea why this came into my parents' possession and I have tried to find more about the 53rd Welsh but although there is much to read of their service in both World Wars I cannot find any mention of their post WW1 activities.
Can anyone suggest which cup final it was and whom the owner may be? Thankyou

Lancashire / Wynnes of West Derby

My great uncle Thomas Wynne was a policeman in Liverpool, lived in West Derby, (Everton?) retired in 1914 and apart from a solitary daughter I've been unable to find any of his offspring. I'd love to find any information to help with my family tree. I met him before his death in 1954ish and he was a lovely man.

Denbighshire / Chirk cenotaph
« on: Friday 27 April 12 16:16 BST (UK)  »
When I Google 'Chirk cenotaph' I can visit a site 'Soldiers who died in the 1914-1918 War Commemorated on Chirk Cenotaph.  Among the names is that of my great uncle
and appears as " Pvt George Evans, died aged 26 Tues. 21 Sept. 1915, son of Isaac & Mary Evans, Woodland Cottage, Gelded, Chirk, Denbighs. Remembered Lapugnoy Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais France."
However, for some reason his name does not appear on the Chirk Cenotaph, so I wonder why it comes up on the Google site. I have been unable to find any local mention of George but his grave appears on the War Grave site. Can anyone explain this curiosity?

Denbighshire / Chirk aquaduct
« on: Friday 09 March 12 16:18 GMT (UK)  »
When Chirk and Pontcysyllte aquaducts were being built, where did Thomas Telford and William Jessop live? I have been told Telford lived in a house overlooking Chirk aquaduct, the name escapes me, but it was the opposite side of the road occupied by Dr Salt Snr in the 1950's. I hope to be showing friends the two aquaducts next month and it would be a bonus if I could point to where the two engineers lived.

Denbighshire / Chirk paper mills
« on: Tuesday 07 February 12 16:03 GMT (UK)  »
My Harmsworth atlas gazetteer for 1905/06 gives Chirk as having paper production as its main industry, making no mention of coal mining. At this time Brynkinalt Colliery was very much an active mine, my grandfather having been killed there in September 1906.
I have never heard mention of paper being produced in Chirk although I believe it was made somewhere close. Has anyone an idea where this would have been?
Thanks.

Denbighshire / Heritage & Local history Centre
« on: Tuesday 25 January 11 15:20 GMT (UK)  »
Is there such a facility as a Heritage Centre in Chirk? I ask because the small town near to where I live, decided a few years ago that unless memories of local folk, who like many in Chirk had never left, were not recorded a lot of local history would be lost.
There is now a thriving Heritage centre run by volunteers, with recordings accessed via computers, of stories from local people, photographs, documents, artifacts and a gift shop. It attracts enquiries world wide and has helped many with family history searches. I thought if Chirk had the same, a lot of local history would be preserved. Of course, if such a centre exists, please ignore what I have written.

Wicklow / Brennan
« on: Monday 18 May 09 12:26 BST (UK)  »
Hello list,

I would like to confirm that the grave I saw in the graveyard of the Protestant Church (name?) in Avoca, of Mary or (Eileen) Brennan is that of my great Aunt Eileen Brennan nee Wynne. It is some time since I saw the grave and although I made a note of the inscribed name I have lost it but I do recall the person buried died Nov 1963.
I know that at one time, about 1960 she was living at the Garage in Avoca since I recall sending her a telegram telling of her sister's death in Chirk, North Wales.
There was no mention of her husband, name unknown, being buried in the same plot. Would this imply that he was a Catholic and buried in a seperate cemetary?
If anyone can tell me anything about this Brennan I would be very grateful.
Thankyou

Northumberland / Problem with Potts
« on: Tuesday 10 March 09 15:07 GMT (UK)  »
It would be wonderful if someone could help with the following and end a 15 year search.
The marriage of Margaret Williamson b 1850 and William Potts b 1851. William born in Hexham and Margaret in Acomb. Their first child Ellen was christened 31st Dec 1872 in Hexham, other children were Mary, William, George, Margaret, Ralph, Annie and John. The 1881 census gives Ellen's birth place as Newcastle. As far as I know the family were always in Hexham. I cannot find any record of their marriage or of Ellen's birth certificate. Certificate I have sent for have prooved to be wronf. Many thanks Keithwynne

Original Title: Catholic Church in Chirk

Hello list,
Can someone tell me when the Catholic Church in Chirk was built and anything about its history?
Thankyou
Keithwynne

Moderator Comment: The original title has been changed to reflect that this topic is gradually encompassing other memories of Chirk, too. :)
