Northumberland / Where is James Hewson pre 1891 census ?
« on: Sunday 01 July 12 18:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could spot my James Hewson (born 1853/1854 in Rickergate, Carlisle) in any census before the 1891 ?

I have tried every spelling of Hewson I can think of and some wildcards but can`t come up with anything that looks like him. Here`s what I have so far -

1891 living at Westgate with wife Sarah (1854 Wigton) and 4 children. Occupation is coal miner
1901 Gateshead, with wife and 6 children. Occupation is retail grocer and fruiterer
1911 Gateshead, with wife and 3 children. Occ is given as `chiefly dealer`

From these sources I think these are the children. They were all enumerated as born in Newcastle, apart from James and Anthony who were born in Gateshead.
Kate 1876
Margaret 1878
Peter 1882
John Robert 1886
Sarah E 1889
Mary E 1890
James 1893
Anthony 1895

I found a baptism for a James Hewson on FS of 22nd May 1853, St Cuthberts, Carlisle with parents Anthony Hewson and Ann Rutherford.
There is a marriage of an Anthony Hewson and Ann Rutherford Cunningham in Carlisle in 1853.
I can`t find a marriage for James and Sarah which should be in about 1874 if the 1911 census is correct.
I`ve run out of ideas so anybody elses would be much appreciated  ::)

Hi  :)

Where would I find newspapers for 1900 onwards covering Newcastle ? Hopefully online but if not, where is the best place to visit to see them ?

I don`t live in the UK so I`m not really up on these things  ::)

Thanks

The Common Room / Death cert help
« on: Thursday 15 March 12 19:44 GMT (UK)  »
There is a family story that one of my relatives pushed his wife over, she hit her head and she died a couple of weeks later.

I have her death cert and on it the cause of death is convulsions, paralysis and syncope.

Is it likely that the bump on the head and her death are linked ? The death happened in 1909. Would there have been a post mortem if the death was suspicious ?

Hi  :)

My Hubby`s G Grandad worked as an Ordnance Machine Man at the Elswick works in 1911.  Here`s my posting so far....

I thought the key to unlocking this was to be found in Edinburgh, but I`m not getting far, so I thought I`d try looking at the Newcastle end of things.  Any help or pointers would be wonderful.

Thanks
Kindest regards

Midlothian / James Robertson of Edinburgh
« on: Saturday 25 June 11 11:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi  :)

I`ve been going round and round, racking my brain, thinking how I can move on with my search for my husband`s ancestors.

Isabella Grace Robertson was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1904.  On her birth cert her parents were James Robertson (born approx 1867 or 1868) and Isabella Murray.

On the 1911 census Isabella Grace was living with her father, who said he had been married 14 years (so 1896 or 1897) and was born in Edinburgh with 8 children born alive, 4 still living. No wife or other children were living with them in the boarding house.

Family rumours say the 3 brothers of Isabella Grace were put into care homes and Catholic orphanages in Newcastle and I have found some evidence of this, but with names of George, Robert and William it`s very difficult.

I have looked on SP for a marriage of James Robertson and Isabella Murray and only found a one in 1914 (in Lochee, Dundee City) which I assume can`t be right, and no matches in the Catholic marriage registers.  Ancestry haven`t come up with any likely marriages in  Scotland or England either.

Any ideas? Any help VERY gratefully received.

Northumberland Lookup Requests / M. I`s in Alnwick
« on: Monday 24 January 11 17:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi  :)

Does anyone have access to the monumental inscriptions for Alnwick ?

I`m looking for John Porter. He was married in 1827 and his son was born in 1829 but he is nowhere to be found in the 1841 census and his wife (Jane Stanley 1800-1889)  is a widow on the 1851 census, so I`m assuming  ::) he died.

Thank you

Northumberland / Back Way in Alnwick 1828
« on: Saturday 15 January 11 20:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all  ;D

I`ve come to a bit of a stop , can anybody help, or point me in the right direction as this is my first foray into Alnwick.

Has anyone any idea where Back Way was in Alnwick in 1828 ?  Are there any online maps I could have a look at from that time ?

I`m looking for info on John Porter (no idea what year he was born, but his wife and son were living without him in 1841)
I have his marriage to Jane Stanley (born 1800, Alnwick)  in 1827 where it says they were both of the parish of Alnwick, I also have the baptism of his son William in 1828, where it has their address as Back Way and that John is a cabinet maker.

I have Jane in the 1841 census (Dispensary St, she was a grocer) onwards with William and everything after that - it`s just pre 1841 that  I`m looking for. Any help or pointers would be wonderful  :)

Tracey
