Travelling People / Marriages
« on: Saturday 02 February 13 22:04 GMT (UK)  »
I hope this makes sense as I do not have all the details at hand.

I have previously asked for help trying to find more details about my ancestors who were either gypsy or travellers, I can trace most of them on censuses from the earliest, I have details of names and dates etc of some but what I was wondering was is there anyway I can find marriages as there doesn't seem to be any record of them in parish records.

I haven't tried to look for this branch of my family for a while so if in the last 12 months or so there have been any new developments in where to search for these ancestors records I would be grateful if anyone could give me some tips.

Thank you.

The Common Room / Recent Birth Registered Twice???
« on: Wednesday 17 October 12 17:09 BST (UK)  »
I should probably know the answer to this but I don't so could someone tell me if they know please.

I was not married when I had two of my children they appear in the records in both my name and in their fathers name, surely as he was there when the births were registered and their birth certificates only have their fathers name on it,  I do of course mean surname, surely it would only need one entry.

Thanks.

Armed Forces / Badge
« on: Tuesday 06 March 12 10:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

My great uncle served in WW2 in Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, he died in September 1944.

Today we have found some photographs and are trying to work out if it is him, we think it  probably is but would like to know if it is possible for him to have a badge of two crossed rifles on his sleeve between the elbow and the cuff.  When he died he was the rank of corporal.  We cannot make out any of the other badges at the moment.

Thank you in advance.

Staffordshire / Electoral Roll Aldridge 1929 and Burial
« on: Saturday 30 July 11 12:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Can someone tell me where I go to check my previous post as I am sure I had some.

The question I would like to ask is does anyone have access and could look at the 1929/1930 electoral roll for Aldridge.

The address is Branton Hill Lane, the name I am hoping to find is Abraham Francis Phillipson he died there on 14th August 1930 but I don't know how long he lived there, who with or what number.

Also if anyone would know where he was likely to be buried I would be grateful.  He was a Catholic but I don't know if he would have been buried at a Catholic church as I have spoken to the local Father and he said none of the churches around Aldridge have graveyards.

Thank you.

Essex / Boreham
« on: Sunday 17 July 11 19:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Has anyone done any research into the history of Boreham.  I visited there last weekend as some of my ancestors have gravestones in St Andrews Church but I believe they were probably Catholic, they worked at New Hall, Boreham.

I would like to get more information on what would be at New Hall in the mid to late 1800's, is there a book that is published locally the I could buy.

Thank you in advance.

Travelling People / Traveller Families
« on: Friday 06 March 09 18:10 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently stared to trace my mothers paternal side and have found her grandmother, gt grandparents and two other generations and have found that they were travellers.  Years of birth can vary by more than 5 years for some of them, also places of birth can vary from census to census.

One birth I am particularly interested in finding is of a Major Clayton the earliest birth I have for him is 1819 and when he died in 1889 he said he was 62.  I have found baptism records for some of his siblings, and his name on censuses appears as Mary (it does say Mary was a son maybe they misheard the name), James and Major.  I can find no birth or marriage for him but do know  he may have been born before 1837.

On each census I have found him he was born in a different place.

I am beginning to wonder if his real name wasn't Major but he adopted this at a later date.

Counties I have the family from/in are Warwickshire, Staffordshire (I know when they lived here the boundaries sometimes strayed into Warwickshire), Worcestershire, Hampshire and Northampton.

Majors father on all but one census says he was from Northamptonshire and his mother always says she was from Wilton, Northamptonshire.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
