The Common Room / Richard KINLIN...a puzzle!
« on: Monday 25 January 10 12:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone, I really hope somebody can help me with my GGG Grandfather Richard KINLIN. Born about 1848, Manchester, Lancashire according to the census returns.

I have a very probable marriage for him :

Dec 1871 - Richard KINLAN Stockton 10a 229 (Mary Ann McIntyre also on page)

From 1881 he is not a problem, I have located him thus:

1881 census - Dale Street, Middlesbrough, iron roller (?)
1891 census - High Wilson Street, Middlesbrough, rivetter
1901 census - Station Street, Middlesbrough, boiler rivetter

All with wife Mary Ann and children

Probable death 1912 Middlesbro 9d 768 (age tallies with birth year of 1847/48)

BUT where did he come from? I can't find any trace of him on any census until 1881, 10 years after his marriage! I can't find a birth or baptism for him either.

I am just about to send off for the marriage certificate of 1871 but I just wondered if any kind Rootschatters out there could help me in the meantime. Any ideas, clues, where to go next?

PS .There is a Mary KINLIN (born abt 1813, Ireland) living in Middlesbrough in 1881 census (listed as Grandmother) staying with an Ann BOLTHAM (born abt 1851 in Scotland ??? which puts a spanner in the works)...possibly Richard's mother and married sister? . Also Ann's two young sons. Just a thought and maybe a clue, but it hasn't helped me much.

Many thanks.

Durham / Broomshields Hall, near Satley
« on: Thursday 30 April 09 09:03 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

My GG Grandfather Thomas CARR was listed as a gamekeeper at Broomshields Hall in the 1871 census. I have searched the internet for any information on the hall but not a great deal comes up, just some pictures of the old walls and lodge house. This of course is good but I would really like to know more!

I wondered if anyone could help me and point me in the direction of any information about Broomshields Hall, absolutely anything at all would be great.

Thanks in advance,

Em

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Iron Warehouse Yard, Middlesbrough
« on: Sunday 19 April 09 19:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I have a MOORE family living in 3 Iron Warehouse Yard, near Stockton Street, Middlesbrough from the 1871 to 1901 census.

I wondered if anyone could help me find out where this would be located. I can find Stockton Street on a modern map, but with it being a long-ish road I was hoping I might be able to pinpoint a more accurate position for Iron Warehouse Yard.

I don't live too far from the area so would ideally like to see what is there now.

Thanks in advance,

Em

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / William INCKLE - the farmer
« on: Friday 10 April 09 18:49 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone.

William INCKLE (a brother of my GGG Grandfather) was a "farmer of 40 acres" (according to 1881 census).

His father as far as I can ascertain was a labourer during his lifetime, so I wondered how William managed to get himself such a snazzy job?

Here's what I know about William :-

Born 21 Sep 1838, baptised 3 Aug 1845, in Cottingham, Northants (from transcribed parish records) I can't find him on FreeBMD.

  Married Ellen PEACOCK 1859 Lincoln

I found him in the 1881 census as a farmer of 40 acres in Fiskerton, Lincolnshire

I also have a likely death for him from FreeBMD in 1915, Lincoln (which lists him as 77, which ties in perfectly with his DOB).

So what I would like help with, is how would he have been likely to get such a job as a farmer? His parents certainly had little money as far as I can see. Could it have something to do with his marriage? Would he have owned the land or rented it? Is there any way of finding this out?

I hope someone can point me in the right direction, many thanks  ;D

Can anyone help me find these brothers?

William WRIGGLESWORTH m ELIZABETH ANN NEWALL Stockton 1874

William WRIGGLESWORTH d Durham 1878

Elizabeth Ann goes on to marry William RAVEN m 1879

The RAVEN family can be found on 1881, 1891 and 1901 census living in Framwellgate Moor, Durham.

There are two children listed in the RAVEN household censuses that I need to know about please.

Henry WRIGGLESWORTH (Raven)
Charles WRIGGLESWORTH (Raven)

These are the children I am interested in, and I cannot find their births registered anywhere  :(

All the censuses point to them being born in Framwellgate Moor, Durham, born in c 1876 and 1877 respectively. (ie during Elizabeth's first marriage to Wm Wrigglesworth).

How can I find their births please? I've tried FreeBMD with no luck.

This is my first question of this type on Rootschat, so apologies if I have missed something out. I have ordered the WRIGGLESWORTH/NEWALL wedding certificate but having a hard time finding their kids births!

Thanks in advance for any help, or tips on where to go next.

Graveyards and Gravestones / Can't afford gravestones?
« on: Saturday 28 March 09 01:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, just a quick question.

I have found 20 plus burials registered so far at a certain church, all members of the family I am researching. This is over a period of about 75 years. However, there is only one grave with a memorial gravestone belonging to the family. Interestingly the three deaths are 40 years apart, whereas other close family members don't have gravestones.

I have spoken to a lovely lady at the local history society and she said that they weren't a family "who could afford such things" as gravestones. So I was just wondering what was the norm for people who could not afford gravestones, were they buried in unmarked graves in the churchyard?

Thanks, Em

Family History Beginners Board / 1940s Lancasterian Special School
« on: Wednesday 25 March 09 20:03 GMT (UK)  »
Wondered if anyone can help me. and I hope I have posted this in the right place, still getting a bit lost on here but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it, maybe one day  ;D

I have just found a school admission record for a relative of mine. I can't give too many details with it being fairly recent history. My relative was enrolled there from April 1943 until December 1945. from being 13 until 15.

It gives his "reason for leaving" as "permission to go to work".

This was the Lancasterian Special School, Sheffield. of which I can find very little information so far

I just wanted to know more about special schools in the 1940s, were they the same as our special schools today? Any information on this one in particular would also be useful of course.

Northamptonshire / General help - Gretton/Cottingham
« on: Wednesday 25 March 09 10:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone, I'm new to family research and tracing my family name has led me to the villages of Gretton and Cottingham in the early to mid-1800s.

This is an area of the country I know absolutely nothing about, and I wondered if anyone could lead me to some online resources about this area.

The family name I am interested in is INKLE/INCKLE and variants, but I just wanted to build up a general idea of the Gretton and Cottingham area at the time.

The family seem mainly to be involved in agricultural labour at this time, although I do have a Thomas Inkle, parish clerk and sexton of St Mary Magdelene, Gretton in 1851.

Any help at all will be appreciated, thank you in advance  :)

Family History Beginners Board / Hello everyone, I'm new!
« on: Wednesday 25 March 09 09:28 GMT (UK)  »
Firstly I hope I have posted this is the correct section  :)

Hello everybody, I'm brand new to RootsChat and fairly new to family history. I started researching my family name about 2 weeks ago and so far have found lots of information online, and I have to admit I'm addicted already!

My main research area so far is the INKLE/INCKLE family name based around the Gretton and Cottingham areas of Northamptonshire in the 1800s. There seems to be many variants of this name and the family later branch out to Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, to name but a few places! However I want to concentrate to the Northampton connection before I become too overwhelmed!

Anyway I don't want to ramble on too much yet (I'm good at that!). Just saying hello and be prepared for lots of newbie-type questions!

Thanks!
