Armed Forces / Help needed to identify this uniform or any information at all
« on: Wednesday 01 March 23 13:50 GMT (UK)  »
These are two (very poor) images of my husband's grandfather. We don't have anything clearer unfortunately. He was in the British army in Malta. Can anyone help with identification of the uniform or anything really. He looks a lot older in the 2nd image. He was born in 1898 and died in 1953. As far as I know he never left Malta.

Thank you.

The Common Room / Three Train Crash Survivors
« on: Wednesday 27 July 22 11:27 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for any information about three men who were caught up in the Chelford Train Disaster on 22nd December 1894. They were all passengers and survived but were injured. They also took part in the rescue effort. Unfortunately, the information I have is brief. I would like to find them on the census if possible but I am struggling at the moment. I don't have their ages or place of birth but I have addresses. They were all travelling 3rd class in the same carriage.

1) Mr Henry Bennett, 5 Bent Terrace, Crofts Bank Road, Urmston, Lancashire. Henry was a card maker in Ardwick, Manchester;

2) Mr E Tubb/Tubbe/Tobbe, 21 Rectory Road, Parsons Green, London;

3) Mr E T Smith, 32 Ludgate Hill, London. He had been doing business in Liverpool and Manchester and was travelling home;

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?  :)

Cheshire / Looking for a birth registration or baptism for James Boyle
« on: Friday 10 June 22 14:01 BST (UK)  »
Looking for help please to find a birth registration or a baptism for James Boyl(e) who was born in Chorley, Cheshire c.1843. He was the son of David Boyle and Elizabeth (Betty) Burgess.

Elizabeth (Betty) Burgess was married to her first husband Joseph Acton in 1829 and he died in 1836. She married her second husband, David Boyle, in 1844. She had five children with Joseph Acton.

She then had five children with David Boyle, some of them born before their marriage in 1844:-

Mary Boyle (2nd qtr 1840)
James Boyle (???)
William Boyle (3rd qtr 1845)
John Boyle (3rd qtr 1847)
Ralph Boyle (4th qtr 1853)

The only birth registration I haven’t found is for James. All the others have the mother’s maiden name of Burgess.

When James Boyle gets married to Amelia Hewitt, he uses the name Acton (3rd qtr 1872). Following him through the census – in 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881 he is recorded as Boyle then in 1891 and 1901 he is recorded as Acton.

Amelia has two sons registered as Hewitt before she married James and then goes on to have children with James who were registered as Acton but on the 1881 census they were recorded as Boyle.

Amelia died in 1906 registered in the name of Acton and James died in 1911 or 1921 also registered in the name of Acton. There was another James Acton in the area who was born around the same time in Wilmslow. He was married to Elizabeth Cretney.

Thanks.

Cheshire / Looking for Robert Acton
« on: Monday 06 June 22 15:09 BST (UK)  »
I am struggling to find Robert Acton on either the 1871 or 1881 census or even to pin down his birth on the GRO to get his mother's maiden name.

This is what I know. He died of typhoid fever on 31st Oct 1895 in Alderley, Cheshire. He was 27 years old and his wife, Annie, was present at the death. So he would have been born c.1868. He was buried in the church yard at St John's Church, Lindow.

He married Annie Priestner on 27th Feb 1891 at Witton-cum-Twambrooks, Northwich. He was 23 years old so that ties in with an 1868 birth year. His father is James Acton. His birth place is given as Macclesfield.

Robert and Annie appear on the 1891 census (RG12/2821/61 page 30) living at Sandy Lane, Morley, Pownall Fee in the district of Wilmslow. His occupation is farmer's son.

They had 2 children: John born 2nd qtr 1891 and Emma born 1st qtr 1893, both registered Altrincham. In 1901, Annie is living off her own means at Water Lane, Wilmslow with the 2 children and 2 boarders (RG13/3319/138 page 33).

This should be a straight forward search but I am not doing very well with it so any help would be appreciated please.

The Common Room / Looking for Mary Ann Booth after 1861
« on: Tuesday 19 April 22 12:57 BST (UK)  »
Looking for some help locating Mary Ann Booth after 1861. She was baptised on 19th July1822 in Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire. Her parents were Peter Booth, a surgeon and apothecary, and Mary. Both parents died in 1844. In 1841 and 1851 she is in Chapel-en-le-Frith: in 1841 with her parents and sister and in 1851, her brother, Byron Booth, was head of the household. He was at medical school in 1841.

In 1861, Mary Ann is in the household of her now married sister, Martha Elizabeth Simpson. They are living at Bollington House, Nether Alderley, Cheshire. The reference is RG9, 2587, 12, 18, 512994. Mary Ann is single. She was described as a "landed proprietor".

Their brother, Byron Booth, is in Street Lane, Alderley Edge, Cheshire with his family in 1861. He is the village surgeon/doctor. The reference is RG9, 2587, 81, 1, 542994.

Mary Ann is not with either sibling in the later censuses. Byron dies in 1877 and Martha Elizabeth in 1892.

Thanks  :)

These two photographs are a married couple. Judging by the background they seem to be have been taken on the same day. The man died in 1864 at the age of 39 years, In 1864 the woman would have been 35 years old.

So the photographs would have been taken early 1860's. I think something is very wrong. The people look too old to be this couple. The fashion seems more towards 1900 than 1860. Would love your opinons and thoughts.

Cheshire / Birthplace - "Lindow Chorley RD"
« on: Wednesday 13 January 21 14:54 GMT (UK)  »
I have a birth location as "Lindow Chorley RD". The birth is in 1903 and the father is unknown. I was expecting a workhouse birth but the Wilmslow Workhouse located at the edge of Lindow Common closed during the 19th Century. Can anyone help clarify as to what "Lindow Chorley RD" means please? The registration district was Macclesfield and the sub-district Alderley. Could it be as simple as Chorley Road, Lindow and if so where was this please?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Photo date please Adam Ashworth
« on: Thursday 05 November 20 10:27 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for help in dating this photograph. Could it be as early as 1870? I would guess it would have been taken in either Uttoxeter, Staffordshire or in Cheshire. The back is blank except for the name "Adam Ashworth".

Thank you.  :)
