Australia / NSW Artillery - 1880 to 1885
« on: Tuesday 19 January 21 11:25 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping someone can direct me to the archives, etc, where the records of the New South Wales Artillery (for the years 1880 to 1885) are held.

Given that period of service was prior to Australian Federation, would the records be held by an archives in Great Britain, New South Wales or even Australia?

The 'soldier' was a Henry Smith who enlisted in Sydney in 1880 (aged 17yrs) and who was discharged (after 5 years engagement) in August 1885 (aged 22 yrs) at Sydney.  Henry was a 'Gunner'.

Thank you

I am researching the BUSH family, who came from the Ellingham / Ringwood / Fordingbridge area.  In particular, I am trying to locate the baptism of a child who was born in March 1907.  I have the birth certificate, but I am hoping that the baptism record (if found) can provide additional clues to the parent's origins.

The birth cert. shows Winifred Norah Bush TURNER was born March 1907 at Pond Side Farm, Millbrook (western outskirts of Southampton) - parents = Ellen Turner, formerly Bush and William George Turner, a ship's engineer.  The birth was registered 28 March 1907 at Millbrook (South Stoneham district) by the informant, Ellen Turner, mother, Pond Side Farm, Millbrook.

I have not yet located any Bush-Turner marriage which, in addition to the child being given the mother's maiden name as a third Christian name, leads to the possibility that the parents were not married.

I have checked Millbrook parish baptism but could not locate a likely entry.  An Ellen Bush, who was born at Ellingham (abt 1892) is listed in the 1901 census with her family at Highwood, parish of Ellingham.  In 1911 Ellen's mother was still at Highwood.  As such I am wondering (a hunch) whether the Ellen Bush from Highwood could be the mother of Winifred Norah (also recorded as Norah Winifred) and if so, that perhaps the baby was taken 'home' to Ellingham (or Ringwood etc) to be baptised.  Given the question mark about parent's marriage, the child could have been baptised as BUSH or TURNER!

(There was another Ellen Bush, who came from Fritham, who I am also considering as a possible mother but need to firstly rule out any Ellingham/Ringwood connection.)

A check of the records for Ellingham and surrounding parishes would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for any assistance given.

Meath / Is this place in Co Meath?
« on: Saturday 24 January 15 13:30 GMT (UK)  »
The attached image is the place that was recorded as an Irish ancestor's birthplace; he was tried at Dublin in the early 1800s.

Given this, the place has to be in Ireland and may possibly be somewhere in Co. Meath.  Is it a townland, village, town or something else?  As for the accuracy of the spelling, I suspect it is someone's guess (a phonetic version) of what my ancestor stated.

I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Thank you

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Were the parents really married?
« on: Wednesday 17 September 14 11:11 BST (UK)  »
I have a birth certificate which shows a child born at Millbrook, Hants, in March 1907.  The father is recorded as William George TURNER (a ship's engineer) and the mother as Ellen Turner, formerly BUSH.  The informant was, Ellen Turner, mother, of Pond Side Farm, Millbrook.

To me, the details indicate that William and Ellen were a married couple but I have not been able to find an appropriate marriage record, nor anything else linking these two names.  Also, the child / family are not listed in the Millbrook parish baptisms.

The 1911 Census is no help.  Thanks to helpful responses to an earlier query about Pond Side Farm (where child was born) I know that neither parent (nor any Turner or Bush) was listed at the farm in 1911, nor in 1901.  Further, when the 1911 Census was taken the child was with adopted parents, not her natural parents.

The 'adoption' seems to indicate that the parents (or a parent) had died by 1911.  Alternatively, with no marriage located, I am wondering whether the mother was actually a single woman.

Regardless, the mother did exist and I am left with the following questions,
* Why can't the marriage record be found?
* What happened to Ellen (the mother) and what are her origins?
* Who was William George Turner, the 'ships engineer' and what happened to him?

I would appreciate any advice / suggestions for further research that might help me to break down this brick wall.

Thank you

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Pondside Farm, Millbrook (Southampton)
« on: Wednesday 10 September 14 18:09 BST (UK)  »
Hello

In 1907, at least, there was a place called Pondside Farm (or Pond Side Farm) at Millbrook, Hampshire.  I have tried to locate information about the farm - location / occupants, etc but have not had any luck.

I also tried to do an address search of the 1911 census (on findmypast) but could not find it.  Not sure if this was due to my lack of skill in address searches or the poor search capability of the 'new' FindMyPast.

I would appreciate suggestions on where else I might check, and / or advice about how to find the address in 1911 census.

Thank you

Hello

I have a listing, from 1932, that gives an address as, "Devonia" Parkhurst, nr Newport. IOW. - I initially thought house/property was called  "Boronia" but others have suggested "Devonia" - see poor quality scan.

I am keen to learn if anyone knows of this house / location.

I have found a "Devonia" that is  (and was) at Newchurch, nr Sandown, Shanklin but the location of that property could hardly be described as at Parkhurst, nr Newport; the distance is too great!

Any suggestions about the Parkhurst address would be appreciated.
Thank you

Hello, please see snapshot of a hand written address that existed on the Isle of Wight, in 1932.

The place is Parkurst, nr Newport but what is the name of the house or property?  I thought perhaps it says, "Boronia" but I'm not sure.

Perhaps someone who knows the Isle of Wight will recognise the name.

Any / all suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you

Australia / Victoria - Index to the Children's Registers of State Wards, 1850-1893
« on: Thursday 06 June 13 10:38 BST (UK)  »
I have found, on Ancestry, a few interesting entries in the Index to the Children's Registers of State Wards (in Victoria) for period 1850 to 1893, but I cannot determine what it all means.  Apart from the child's name and year of birth, the index also lists a volume number and a page number.  I am guessing that the various volume numbers refer to the particular institution where the child was held, but I might well be wrong.

As such, I am hoping to learn what these codes mean, and also to receive some advice on how and where the actual registers can be checked in order to find full particulars of the child's admission. Ideally I would like to obtain copies of the available record so would appreciate advice about how I might do so.

The index shows:
John Smith - b.1866    - vol BB1  page 203
                                      vol OS8    "   319

Walter Smith - b.1868   vol BB1   "   204
                                      vol OS8   "   320

Rose Smith - b.1865   - vol OS2   "   637
                                     vol OS4   "   515

Alice Smith - b. 1861  - vol OS2   "   402
                                     vol OS4   "   512
 Thank you
