Lanarkshire / Poorhouse Calton Glasgow
« on: Tuesday 12 January 21 10:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, wonder if anyone can shed a bit of light on this. After not being able to find my grandmother on the 1911 Census, I finally found her in Calton in Glasgow (she was born in Greenock) in what I think was a poorhouse. But when I look for the poorhouse in Calton I find there was a poorhouse on Clyde St but that seems to have been demolished prior to 1911. Does anyone know if there was a poorhouse in Calton and have any more info on that. thanks

Sutherland / 1841 Census status
« on: Wednesday 26 February 14 08:11 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking at the 1841 census at the family of a Donald McKenzie. Found one who looks good in Badidaroch with his family. The names of the children look good. I've got quite a bit of information on the family now. Donald is given as 60 years old and the children are listed as
Murdo Mckenzie   20
John Mckenzie   15
Rodk Mckenzie   15
Janet Mckenzie   13

The names Murdo John and Janet were all known to me and tie in well. Roderick I wasn't aware of. I notice he's the same age as John so either they are twins or one of them is about to turn 16 pretty sharpish or he's a relative.

I can't see any relationship status on the record and not sure if I'm just missing it. I have looked on ancestry and freecen and can't see relationship status for the people named on the census. I wonder if anyone would know if this information was on the 1841 census. I also would like to know Donald's status ie whether he is a widow. Thanks for any help.

Renfrewshire / Census look-up please
« on: Monday 18 March 13 18:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, wondered if someone might help me by looking for some sighting of this family in the Scottish census prior to 1901. They turn up on the Irish census in county Antrim. John and Bella both born in Scotland but children born in Antrim. I am trying to find if John may be a John McKenzie son of Murdoch McKenzie and Flora McLeod. Have tried to look for a marriage on Scotland's people,  but too many John McKenzie's marrying Isabella's and I obviously don't know if 'Bella' is originally an Isabella so not much to go on.

Mc Kenzie   Bella   1   Female   Daughter   Presbyterian
Mc Kenzie   John   48   Male   Head of Family   Presbyterian
Mc Kenzie   Duncan   5   Male   Son   Presbyterian
Mc Kenzie   Angus   3   Male   Son   Presbyterian
Mc Kenzie   Bella   36   Female   Wife   Presbyterian

Renfrewshire / Gabriel Wood Mariners Home Greenock
« on: Sunday 17 March 13 12:07 GMT (UK)  »
I just realised that the Gabriel Wood Mariners home still exists in Greenock. Some of the records survive. One of my ancestors worked at this establishment in 1901 and appears there on the census returns. I am obviously going to contact them to find out exactly what they have but I just wondered if anyone on here has one research there and might know what kind of material they have access to. Thanks.

United States of America / Details of Death in California
« on: Thursday 18 October 12 21:54 BST (UK)  »
hi all, I have come across a death registered in Fresno California for a Gavin P McCall in 1990. There is a possibility he was married to a relative of mine. Is there any quick and easy way to get more information on the death which would confirm if he was the right person?

The Gavin P McCall I am looking at was born in Paisley in 1903 and went to the US via Canada in 1910. I find various entries for him on the census on the family search.org site with his parents and brother and then with his wife Mary (McMillan) and their children.

The entries all relate to Buffalo. But then there seems to be a death entry for him in California. I wonder if there's any way of easily confirming if it's the right person. thanks

Renfrewshire / Mcall Peacock Paisley area
« on: Friday 12 October 12 23:11 BST (UK)  »
hi all, just wondered if anyone out there is looking at the family of William McCall and Nellie Peacock from Paisley who went to the US via Canada in 1910. They had a son Gavin McCall - appears in the records often as Gavin P McCall - who married a possible relative of mine Mary McMillan. They had two children Robert and Barbara. Though they mostly appear in census returns for Buffalo NY there appears to be a reg of death for Gavin in California in 1990.

I would love to hear from anyone else with a connection to/interest in this family who could help me with research.

I might just put a note of this on the board for the USA as well, hope it's ok to do this, as someone who uses that board may know something of the family. Thanks for any help.

Renfrewshire / Census look up request
« on: Wednesday 10 October 12 22:55 BST (UK)  »
hi all, I haven't done any research for ages so am a bit rusty (not that I was ever great in the first place). I am trying to find some info on my great grandmother's extended family. She was Agnes (Aggie) McShane who was born about 1879. I assumed born in Greenock but I'm not obviously seeing her on Scotland's People being born in that area. There's not many at that age so wouldn't take too much credits to find her but I wonder if anyone has access to the census and can see her on there in 1881/1891. First records I have of her are with my grandmother on the 1901 census where they seem to have been both listed incorrectly as 'Maggie' McShane.

Then in 1902 Aggie snr marries a Robert Graham. Her father is listed as John McShane a joiner and mother deceased was Rose ms Devine.  I would really like to get a look at her family, any siblings who might appear on an earlier census and a census place. Many thanks for any help on this.

Renfrewshire / Really Confused - help needed!
« on: Monday 30 April 12 17:33 BST (UK)  »
I have a real headache with one of my ancestors here and I'm wondering if someone else looking at it can see something which I'm not getting. Maybe I'm hitting on the wrong person. Thanks for any help you can give.

I have posted elsewhere on the Ross and Cromarty board but thought I'd put something on here because one census return shows Flora being born in Greenock.

I have a Flora McLeod/MacLeod who married a Murdoch McKenzie. I can't find a marriage cert for them and I can't find a birth cert for either which is obvious to me at this time.

I am puzzling over where they came from. I think that Murdoch possibly came from Lochbroom but Also it's entirely possible he was from Assynt in Sutherland.  I can't really find any information about Flora.

Except her death cert. She died in Greenock in 1910. Age given on death cert is 91. So if that's right she would have been born 1819. Her parents are given as Donald McLeod crofter dec and Christina McDonald dec. Given the names and the fact father was a crofter I obviously thought she, like Murdoch, came from somewhere more north. But I think I see her on 1851 census. What I see there just confounds me.

If I have the right lady it gives her age as 26. I can't see any sign of any children with her. It describes her as wife of a seaman. Murdoch, the husband, appears to be in Inverness for that census. He's stationed there with the Merchant Navy. Her address at that time is Charles St, Lamont's Land (does anyone know anything of that, never heard of Lamont's Land).  It says she was born in Greenock.

Both her and Murdoch's death are reported by a son Murdoch.

If I have the right Flora McKenzie then there's some discrepancy with age. Also, I can only find these births on igi. If they were married in 1851 did they really only have their first child in 186o?? Ok that doesn't mean there weren't earlier children, maybe they're just not on igi. But why are none of them with her in Greenock in 1851?

these are the births I can find for their children on igi.
