My g g grandmother Isabella Reid died in 1859. I know her parents names from her death cert. I know  from the 1851 census that she was born in Fife. Scotland's People  have kindly done a rescan of this census ( believe me this is a huge improvement!) but I still have no real idea as to where in Fife she was born. Any suggestions ( even if it is just the first letter) would be most gratefully received.

Northumberland / Northumberland Parish Records on Family Search
« on: Monday 30 July 18 08:40 BST (UK)  »
Transcripts of the above are now available. I had hoped that the images would be available too but it would appear that they still have to be viewed in a Familysearch centre.

One plus is that you may find transcripts for parishes not readily available elsewhere. The parish of Lambley is a case in point.

I also suspect  that this is just a first batch of records and that it will be updated in the future.

Durham / Jane Purvis (Moffat) 1812 - 1880
« on: Monday 14 November 16 12:09 GMT (UK)  »
Can I just run this one past you all to see what conclusion you would reach?

In the 1871 census she is living in Bourne Moor

Jane Purvis 59 Head widow (Her age has been mistranscribed as 39).
Thomas Dent 23 grandson
Mary Jane Dent 18 granddaughter
William Dent 1

I have today received her death cert as Jane Purvis. She died in 1880. It is clearly her - the informant is Thomas Dent, grandson and she is recorded as the  widow of Robert Purvis, coal miner. Robert died in 1868.

I "know" that she was born as Jane Moffat and was the daughter of George Moffat and Rosamund Manners. ( I have her baptism and the Penshaw bt's of the baptisms of her children which helpfully give her maiden name).

There is a marriage of a Jane Purvis in Chester le Street Oct. 24 1871 to James Moralee. On the marriage cert she is shown as age 59, a widow and her father is named as George Moffat.

James Moralee died in 1875 in Chester le Street and in the 1871 census he is recorded as living in Bourne Moor.

There are no deaths for a Jane Moralee that I can see. Equally there is no reference to the name Moralee on the death cert of Jane Purvis.

On the basis of the above may I ask what conclusion you would reach regarding whether it was my Jane Purvis who married James Moralee?

Many thanks

Northumberland / Catherine Dent Newcastle Electoral Rolls
« on: Thursday 27 October 16 08:51 BST (UK)  »
Catherine Dent is shown at 28 Bolam Street, Byker in the 1909, 1910, 1911 and 1912 electoral roll for Newcastle. This is also the address given for her and her family in the 1911 census.

My question is this for the vast majority of properties on Bolam Street on these electoral rolls it states "dwelling house". For 28 Bolam Street it simply states "house". Any thoughts on why this might be?

Banffshire / Banffshire: The People and The Lands
« on: Friday 22 April 16 09:05 BST (UK)  »
Just a heads up. Find My Past has added two new titles to its Scottish Registers and Records, the above and Moray: The People and The Lands.  They would appear to have records taken from the Kirk Session Records as short abstracts as well as descriptions of the parishes included. I have already located reference to my great grandfather's illegitimacy. So far not the easiest collection to browse through but I think if you can add text to the full text box the initial search is narrowed down.

Durham / Sarah Elizabeth and Catherine Hannah Shotton
« on: Friday 11 September 15 11:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi
The above girls appear in the 1871 census in West Auckland with their parents (mistranscribed on one site as Stratten)
George 44 Ag lab b Etherley Moor
Mary A 34 b not clear but might be St Helen
Sarah E 9 b as above
Catherine H 2 b West Auckland

It would appear that George and Mary Ann died within a month of each other in 1874 and entries for them in the probate calendar in 1876 show that administration of their effects was granted "under the usual limitations to Jane Ward (wife of John Ward, shoemaker) of New Elvet in the City of Durham the Aunt and Guardian of Sarah Shotton a minor and Catherine Hannah Shotton an infant the Daughters and only Next of Kin".

I cannot see what happened to Sarah and Catherine thereafter (There is one possibility for Catherine which has her in the Durham workhouse in the subsequent censuses although the place of birth is wrong - one census has her recorded as feeble minded).

Their aunt Jane Ward died in 1885. I have her will. She made bequests to her surviving siblings, Catherine Pattison, Hannah Applegarth, Elizabeth Cowens and William Shotton and to some of her nieces but there is no mention of Sarah or Catherine.

Any help in working out what happened to Sarah and Catherine would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Banffshire / Margaret Ogg b 1868 Keith
« on: Friday 11 July 14 18:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Margaret Ogg was the illegitimate daughter of Isabella McRobert. She was born, and registered as Margaret McRobert, 5th December in Keith.

In the 1871 census she is recorded in the home of my gg grandmother Margaret McRobert in Land Street, Keith and in 1881 she is again with my gg grandmother but this time is shown as a visitor and general servant domestic, this time in Enzie.

Her mother Isabella, who was a half sister of my gg grandmother, married James Gall in 1870 and had several children with him.

I have recently found an article in the Aberdeen Journal from 1872 which sadly shows that Isabella was prosecuted for assaulting her illegitimate daughter Margaret Ogg. Isabella was fined £5 (prison was the alternative) because of her previous good character.

After the 1881 census I cannot find any records in the census or marriages/ deaths for Margaret Ogg. Any help in finding out what happened to her would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

United States of America / John Dent and Nona McFann
« on: Friday 11 July 14 18:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi

John Dent was the younger brother of my grandfather Robert Dent. He was born 10 July 1885 in Sacriston, Co Durham, England - parents Thomas Dent and Mary Jane Purvis. In the 1901 census he is aged 15, a joiner's apprentice.

I have located a shipping record which shows that John went to the United States in 1906, arriving in New York November15th.

The next sighting I have of him is his marriage to Nona McFann in Cuyahoga County in May 1910. Nona's parents are given as A. J  McFann and Bessie Callin. I believe that A. J and Bessie divorced and that they both remarried - A. J ( Andrew) to first Emma Hoover and after her death Catherine Klingensmith while Bessie married David Lakie and died in Chicago in 1939.

John and Nona had a daughter who was stillborn and was buried at Parkside Cemetry, Cleveland Aug 30 1911.

I cannot find any other documents relating to John and Nona. ( I have located a marriage for a Nona Dent to Arthur Simonsen in Lake County, Indiana in 1913 but this is inconsistent with other documents found. The Nona Simonsen  I have found married to Arthur in the 1930 census has her born in Ohio but in 1940 is transcribed as Nona Simonson born in Kentucky. The record on find a grave also has birthplace as Kentucky. Arthur Simonsen's WW1 draft papers show he was single as does the 1920 census).

Any help in finding out what happened to John Dent and Nona McFann would be much appreciated.

Thanks

William
