Monmouthshire Lookup Requests / Pontypool - Online Burials
« on: Monday 08 October 12 14:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi does anyone know if I can search online (like Oldham, Warrington and Manchester) for online burial/grave details for Pontypool and Abergavenny, Monmouthshire.

My Great Grandmother is buried in Pontypool 'Mary Lane' nee Bostock and I am trying to find if she is buried in a family grave.

Any help would really be gratefully received.

World War One / Where do you start researching war records?
« on: Friday 07 September 12 12:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I am trying to trace the war records of my Great Grandfather and Great Great Uncle of whom I have photo's of them dressed in military uniform. See attached :-)

I am asking for anyone's direction on where to find their war records as no within in the family  knows where they were stationed or whether they were conscripted into the Great War or the 2nd World War.

Joseph my Great Grandfather was born in Manchester in 1900 Gorton, Lancashire, England and Albert in 1895 in Newton Heath, Lancashire, England. They appear with their brother John Henry and the rest of the family on the 1911 census at 38 Briscoe Lane Newton Heath Manchester. Source Citation: Class: RG14; Piece: 24275.

How can I confirm they were in the military? I expect they were in the Cheshire regiments as they were born and lived in Manchester most of their lives.

Derbyshire / Help with a census search Clara Smith nee Marsden
« on: Saturday 14 April 12 21:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi I would like some help with a query.

I have recently obtained a birth/baptism certificate for an ancestor:

Arthur Smith b. 14 Feb 1893 parents James William and Clara. Arthur is born in Hadfield (although I believe it may be Hayfield). William is a Slasher?

I have found a marriage for James William and Clara in Jun 1891 Hayfield 7b 1230
Marsden Clara
Smith James William

but can't seem to find any of them on the 1891, 1901 or 1911 census?

Can anyone help point me in the right direction...

« on: Wednesday 17 August 11 18:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Gorton is completely out of my way, however I am really interested to find out what is inscribed on a gravestone in the cemetery.

The Grave is in the YConsecrated area.

If anyone is visiting the graveyard soon would they be happy to take some notes of what appears on the grave?

Please PM me for Grave position and those buried in the grave.

Thank you,
Dave

Lancashire Lookup Requests / The Horse shoe on Droylsden Rd
« on: Thursday 30 June 11 13:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I am presently attempting to fill in areas of my research with more flesh on the bone, so to speak, and desperately need any advice on how to found out more information on a public house.

From research on the 1841, 51 and 1861 census I know that my ancestor William Holt and his wife Mary Ann Holt nee Ramsbottom were living at a public house called the Horse Show on Droylsden road in Manchester. I have also found a John Ramsbottom in Droylsden in 1841, whom I now believe is Mary's brother.

1841 & ‘51 censuses I have discovered Mary Ann Holt living on Droylsden road but it doesn’t give her an occupation.

However the 1851 Manchester directory lists “Mary Ann Holt, Droylsden Rd Newton Heath, as a beer retailer”.

In 1861 her daughter Ellen Whittaker nee Holt is still on Droylsden Rd, at the Horse Shoe along with her husband James Whittaker who is a calico finisher but the enumerator has written “beerhouse” over that. Ellen would have been running the beerhouse, probably the one that Mary Ann had in 1851. Beerhouses were often just a room in someone’s house and Mary Ann probably brewed the beer herself.

Interesting that by 1861 it was called the “Horse shoe” where William Holt had been a blacksmith.

Does anyone know/or can anyone advice how I can find out more about this inn/pub/beer-house?

Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1950-1 Manchester Electoral Request
« on: Friday 24 June 11 11:48 BST (UK)  »
In the last several weeks after two years of family ancestral and descendancy research it has come to my attention from my aunt that my Great Grandfather had children to another partner after separation from his 1st wife (this information wasn't ever given).

My Great Grandfather Tom Taylor was married to a Deborah Robinson whom he separated from after having the following children all now deceased: Caroline, George, John, Tommy and Elsie.

Deborah went on to have a further 'three' children with another gentleman whose descendants and family my father and aunt are in contact with.

I have now been informed that Tom went on to live with (we are unsure if he married) a Frances x? whom he had two children: Frances and Alma (although we cant be 100% with the correct spelling of their names). I also discovered Frances x may have had a son from a previous relationship known as Kenneth or he may have been Tom's.

My aunt and father remember playing with the children and I am desperately attempting to locate any information for these children, any family or descendants that are currently living, and believe an electoral register search would help. My aunt and father have not heard from this side of the family for over 30 years.

I believe they lived on Mornington street just off Stockport Road in Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester.

Would anyone be able to check any of the early 1950,1, 2, or 3 electoral registers for me at Manchester Library to see if there is any additional information on the family?

Thanks.
