World War One / Uniform Identification
« on: Sunday 31 January 21 06:41 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning, I hope everyone is well and safe,

This photo is purportedly my friend's great grandfather, Arthur Alexander Pipe, Barnsley greengrocer who served throughout the war in 24 Fire Command (Lancs & Ches) RGA.    His attestation form states he had no previous military service,.

We are confused that his uniform appears more cavalry orientated, he is even wearing spurs, and the cap badge doesn't't look like Royal Garrison Artillery.

Any help would be appreciated - many thanks

Armed Forces / 4966146 Pte W Pike 2nd Bn Sherwood Foresters
« on: Tuesday 12 May 20 09:52 BST (UK)  »
Good morning,

I am trying to find anything I can about the above soldier - I have a 1926 REGIMENTAL annual of the Sherwood Foresters at which time the 2nd Bn was in Rawalpindi, though early in that year they moved to a station on the North West Frontier . . . . In the journal, Pte Pike is shown as transferring to the Army Dental Corps in 1.2.1926.

I was quite excited about this (it doesn't much) as I am ex RE and RADC and I am really interested in finding out what I can about this soldier - the Army Dental Corps had only been formed in 1921, so he was one of the early entrants.

I can't approach museums at this point for obvious reasons, and I have searched FindMyPast with no success, I even trawled through a great many Derby and Notts 1939 Register records looking, in the hope he might have trained in the Corps as a dental mechanic, for a W Pike with that occupation.

I am at rather a loss now - I should point out there were two Pte Pikes in the Bn at that time, but the other R Pike, a Bn boxer, is clearly shown in the journal after W Pike has left for Aldershot and a life in the ASC . . . I have found a 1925 Sherwood Foresters journal online which I have ordered in the hope it contains more information . . .

Any guidance would be most appreciated

The Common Room / Leslie Bradford
« on: Sunday 29 March 20 14:07 BST (UK)  »
Good afternoon all,

In would be grateful for any help poking a brick out of my brick wall - I have managed to find a birth for Leslie Bradford born 1903 (10 Apr)but no location as it wasn't the birth registration I found, just a trusted quote -  and I know he married Mary Denman in 1928 registered in Hendon and they had a daughter, Lesley Alice both in Hendon, died in 1980

I also know he was living in Wealdstone in 1939 - but for the life of me I cannot find him on the 1911 census or any trace of his parents - I am handicapped by not knowing where he was born.

Family rumour is his father's name was Arthur but this could be wrong.

To be more specific I am trying not find where Leslie was born hoping it will enable me to find a census entry.

Many thanks for any help you may be able to give - and keep safe in the present imbroglio

The Common Room / Altered Page number on Birth Index
« on: Thursday 13 April 17 08:19 BST (UK)  »
Good morning all,

Whilst researching my family in the statutory indices, in this case the birth index, I noticed that now and again the page number had been crossed out and a handwritten notation made - for example; Birth Cert  volume 2A  page number 191 -  the191  has been crossed out and a handwritten alteration added  that reads  17123/S.

I should add that to maintain privacy I have altered the numbers

Many thanks for any advice as to what this means

Durham / Doris Hardy
« on: Tuesday 09 August 16 09:01 BST (UK)  »
Good morning,

I am trying to trace a Doris Hardy and the only information I have is that she was awarded a prize in 1921 by Jarrow Secondary School - the book plate indicates she was connected to a place called Livingston - I have searched everywhere and the only town I find of that name is the well known one in Scotland.

Can anyone tell me exactly where Livingston, Jarrow is?    I am assuming Doris was between the ages of 11 and 15 when she was given her prize in 1921.

Many thanks . . .

World War Two / Ashtray and Lighter
« on: Monday 01 February 16 13:05 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning All,

A friend found the above in a car boot sale and we are attempting to find out more about the item  - It is about 12 cms high and the base appears to have fettled from the top of a piston, perhaps from a large engine - The lighter mounted on the base bears an engraved old pattern REME badge.around the rim it is inscribed thus:

W/S 55 Test House - Egypt Tel El Kebir 26 September 1947

In Remember to

Josef Feund,  JenfitzKollek,  Heinz Degoutrie,  Willi Jetter,  Herbert Kosicht,  Adolf Teidemann,  Gerhard Potsch

Could they have been civilian workers in a REME workshop, Poles?  Germans?
Thank you,

Cumberland Lookup Requests / The Two Lions
« on: Friday 25 April 14 18:48 BST (UK)  »
Good evening Rootschatters. . . .

I am trying to find residents through the census years of a public house in Great Dockray (there have been different spellings of Dockrey) and I am a bit wary of the new address search in FindMyPast, if in fact there even is one now.

It is a famous (or as famous as a public house in Cumberland can be) building, which is now converted into two private homes.

I would be very grateful for any advice offered.    Thank you very much.

Limerick / Irish Marriage Certificate
« on: Thursday 13 March 14 07:37 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning all,

I am looking at a marriage ceritificate of a marriage in Limerick Registrar's office that took place 10th Aug 1920 between Florence Marion Flindell and William Black - he is stationed in the Ordnance Barracks, Limerick and is in the Royal Enginneers, his rank 2 M S.

My main query is that the marriage took place according to 7 and 8 Vic., Cap. 81 and 26 Vic., Cap. 27 and I have no idea what this means.

In spite of 24 years in the services I am also puzzled in respect of his rank (2 M S) - can only imagine something like Master Sgt, although the meaning of the 2 eludes me.

And advice would be very much appreciated.

best regards

Kincaid
