Occupation Interests / Carpet Beater
« on: Tuesday 11 February 20 07:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

has anyone any idea what a Carpet Beater was?

The only reference on RC was: https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=663428.msg5088580#msg5088580
I found this on the will of James J (Johnson) McKellow died 5.12.1904 South Melbourne Australia. It looks to me on the original and the transcriber at Ancestry as Carpet Beater, this seems to be an "odd" occupation, but then the first powered cleaning machine was so cumbersome it was carried around on a horse-drawn wagon.

Wiltshire / Marriage place
« on: Wednesday 16 October 19 14:52 BST (UK)  »
looking at the marriage of Richard King Bedingfield and Charlotte Elizabeth Trower in 1836.

record 1, bride and groom born Wokingham Berkshire, married 6.7.1836, Jurisdiction: The Dean of Sarum in Wiltshire, Berkshire, Dorset and Uffculme, Devon, County Berkshire.

record 2, married 6.7.1836 Dean of Salisbury Dorset.

record 3, married 16.6.1836 Wokingham Berkshire, by licence.

As all 3 records are for the same people, why the difference?

N.B. on the 1851 census, he is shown as: Schoolmaster And Clergyman Without Cure Of Souls. Ba Queens College Cambridge

I can read 99% of this will. However, there are a few words I cannot read (highlighted on will trans)

Any ideas what they might be?

World War One / Alfred John Glenister Weeden
« on: Tuesday 23 April 19 14:52 BST (UK)  »
Alfred was born circa 1897 in Tunbridge Wells Kent. in 1901 he was at 118, Auckland Road and in 1911 at 27 Silverdale Road (the Census only shows him as Alfred or Alfred John Weeden).
FindMyPast has 5 British Army Service Records:

Weeden Alfred John – 7325 14th Battalion London Regiment. Image is for his medals.
Weeden Alfred John – 513131 2/14th Battalion London Regiment Image for his discharge.
Weeden Alfred John – 1214 4th Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment Image of statement of disability, address 2 Norfolk Road age 21 dated 12/2/19.
Weeden Alfred John – 7125 2/14th Battalion London Regiment Image of casualty form 17/8/14
Weeden Alfred John 1897—1914 - 2920 4th Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment Image of Attestation, address 23 Silverdale Road.

1. He seems to have joined the 4th Battalion RWK, but was this attached to the 2/14th Battalion London Regiment?

2. the different numbers shown on the Images "could be" as he moved around and/or as in 1. above?

3. I have found him in Auckland Road and Silverdale Road, but not Norfolk Road. This could have been in between Censuses, but it seems clear that it is Alfred John Glenister Weeden at all 3 places and would like to confirm this.

Thank you

Kent Lookup Requests / Elizabeth and Julia Axleillion
« on: Tuesday 20 November 18 07:46 GMT (UK)  »
I am tracing the Tasker Family of Tonbridge Kent. In the 1881 Census for M?ial Cottage, Quarry Hill, Tonbridge, is Stephen (1833 Withyham, Sussex) and Elizabeth (1837 Tunbridge Wells) with there family.
Shown with them are "step Daughter's" Elizabeth and Julia Axleillion. neither Elizabeth or Julia appear before or after and the name Axleillion only appears in this Census for all of England. This is not a transcription mis-spelling, but seems to be a "original" error.
Any suggestions of who Elizabeth and Julia could be?
The only likely marriage I have found is, Stephen Tasker and Elizabeth Clarkson Q4 1858 registered Uckfield Sussex.

London and Middlesex / Married twice?
« on: Monday 12 November 18 08:17 GMT (UK)  »
I have found marriage certificates for William Funnell and Harriet Brown who appear to have married twice, see attached.
There could be various reasons for this, such as the confirmation in each others parish, but is this correct?

Australia / William Henry Clarke
« on: Monday 01 October 18 08:12 BST (UK)  »
John J. and Sophia Stead were buried at the Chiltern (New) Cemetery Victoria. However, on the headstone is William H. Clarke, who seems to have no connection, his will is on FindMyPast (I assume it is him, same date etc.) he was married with a large family.
Can anybody help with what the connection was?

The Common Room / Administration of estate
« on: Tuesday 31 July 18 08:17 BST (UK)  »
Henry Sellwood died 26/3/1883 and Administration of estate was granted to "Sarah Sellwood Widow of the relict", personal estate was £280 3/3; I would have expected to see Administration of estate to Sarah, as Henry had died intestate.

However, Sarah seems to have died in 1891 (BMD for a Sarah Sellwood) and a second grant was made to "Joseph Samuel Sellwood" (the son) effects £200. "Former grant May 1883" in June 1900.
As Joseph was 26 when Henry died, he was of age. Might he have contested the first grant?
Why wait so long and why the difference of £80 3/3?
