Durham Lookup Requests / 1881 Durham Census
« on: Thursday 18 March 10 03:02 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me on the 1881 Durham Census at all please?  I have my Gt Grandfather William McGee living in Dawdon in 1871 and again in 1891.  I also have him for 1901 and 1911 but I cannot find him or the rest of the family in 1881!!!!

In 1871, the family unit was as follows:

James Megee   33
Elizabeth Megee   30
James Megee   10
Robert Megee   7
William Megee   6
John Megee   4
Joseph Megee   2
Jame Megee   5
Mary Megee   5

They then seem to disappear.  The spelling is a bad transcription on Ancestry.  I have tried all sorts of combinations of Magee/McGee/MacGee etc etc but to no avail.  An Elizabeth McGee (widow) does surface with a son William who is a trainee tailor but William was a blacksmith, and some of the other family members don't ring true.

Thanks in advance,  Jackie

Family History Beginners Board / Missing from 1871 and 1881 Censuses
« on: Monday 28 September 09 19:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi there.  I seem to have hit a brick wall with one branch of my family - John CAVANAGH born circa 1859 in Easington, Co Durham.  He appears on the 1861 Census with the rest of his family f John b 1829 and m Margaret b 1825 both from Ireland.  However they all seem to disappear after that!

He surfaces again in 1884 when he marries Catherine Owens in Easington and is then on all the subsequent censuses!!!

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I find where they have gone?  I have tried looking for neighbours but that has not brought any result.  I have checked the Scottish censuses for those years as well.  Run out of ideas now so any suggestions gratefully received!!   :)
