Tipperary / John cleary, tailor, father of Patrick Cleary, tailor
« on: Wednesday 12 February 14 23:19 GMT (UK)  »
US records show my wife's ancestor, Patrick Cleary (1832-1893), was born in Tipperary, Ireland, worked as a tailor in London in an 1851 census while living with his older brother.  Patrick married Margaret McAuliffe in London, and the marriage record shows the fathers to be John Cleary and William McAuliffe each of them tailors.  William and his wife Mary appear in the 1841 census in London with their 3 children with marks showing that the parents were born in Ireland, but not the children, but they were not born in the county (or Middlesex or London, I'm not sure).  Patrick and Margaret emigrated to US, their oldest daughter was born in NY in 1855, and the family moved to Marion, Ohio and had several additional children, while Patrick continued as a tailor.  All US census show that Patrick was born in Ireland and Margaret born in England.
Does anyone have any brilliant insight on how to find records of to determine birthdates, dates of death, maiden names of wives of John Cleary from Tipperary and William and Mary McAuliffe from Ireland. ???

Norfolk / Samuel Gallaway(1770-1834)
« on: Thursday 30 January 14 00:58 GMT (UK)  »
I am seeking any information about my GGGGrandfather who was the father of James Charles Gallaway (1809-1886), a prominent Congregationalist minister.  In a Congregationalist Yearbook in 1886, James Charles' father Samuel was described as follows: "His father, who came of a family of Norfork famers, held an important post under Government.  His mother (Deborah East) ...was the sister of the Rev. Timothy East of Birmingham."
We have his will, but have been unable to find anything more about Samuel or is ancestors.

Anyone have any information?

London and Middlesex / Henry Risley (1850-1929?) and Family
« on: Friday 21 September 12 23:33 BST (UK)  »
Henry Risley, a veneer maker, married Elizabeth Orchard Brown in Shoreditch in 1869 and had four children: Henry, 1870, William James, 1872, Etheldra, 1876, and Lily, 1878. The family appears together in 1871 and 1881 census.

I have circumstantial evidence that Elizabeth split from Henry and emigrated to Brooklyn, New York, USA with Edward Arlidge, a ship caulker who also ran a coffee house, and became the parents of my grandmother.

Elizabeth apparently took her daughters with her to NY, but not her sons.

If anyone has confirming or disputing information regard Henry Risley and his family, I would greatly appreciate it.

London and Middlesex / Edward Arlidge (1845-
« on: Sunday 12 December 10 06:54 GMT (UK)  »
I'm attempting to confirm a hypothesis that Edward Arlidge baptized at St Anne Parish, Limehouse 13 Apr 1845, son of Edward and Mary Anne (Davis) Arlidge emigrated to Brooklyn, New York after the death of his wife Lavinia (Gargrave) in 1881, married Elizabeth Brown and fathered my grandmother, Emily Gladys Arlidge.  I can find no record of Edward after 1881 in England.  On his marriage certificate to Lavinia he is listed as a "caulker", and then became a coffeehouse keeper following his father, who also had a profession as a ship caulker and then became a coffeehouse keeper.  My grandmother's birth certificate from NYC shows her parents as Edward Arlidge and Elizabeth Brown, and 1892 NYC census, after Edward apparently died, shows my grandmother's mother and 3 sisters as having been born in England.  However, based on an 1881 death of Lavinia, it is likely that Elizabeth Brown may have been previously married, had two children, then two more, one in England and my grandmother in NYC.  The oldest child appears in census variously as Edildra, Etheldra, Matilda, or Tilly, the second was Lillie, and Edward's children were Emma and my grandmother .  In various commericial directories in Brooklyn, NY in the 1880's an Edward Arlidge appears whose profession is caulker.  Edward had a daughter Alice Jane, born 1864 that also does not appear ater 1881.  Note she is not the Alice Jane Arlidge that married Robert Coad Barden--this AJ was born some 14 years earlier.  A ship record register of the "Grecian Monarch" arriving in NY from England lists a Mrs. E Arlidge and three children, Tilly, Lily, and infant--it appears that the ages of Tilly and Lily were reversed on the registry.
Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Northumberland / George Hamilton Bell
« on: Monday 18 October 10 23:42 BST (UK)  »
I'm seeking information on the ancestors of George Hamilton Bell, who first emigrated to Prince Edward Island around 1880, married Janie Graham, and then emigrated to USA and was became a naturalized citizen in 1910.

According to his naturalization papers, he was born 22 Sep 1858 in Newcastle on Tyne.  I found a Christening record for whom I believe to be him dated 30 Oct 1858 from St. Nicholas parish which show his parents as John Bell and Ann.  I also found a marriage record of a John Bell and Ann Barlow in Newcastle dated 2 Dec 1850 that may be GHB's parents--Ann Barlow's father is listed as William Smart. All these records are from Ancestry.com databases.

If anyone can shed light on GBH's ancestors by either correcting my information or adding to it, I would be very pleased.

Anyone researching this family?
