James
I apologise for not responding to your reply, I'm afraid xmas took over.  It was very kind of you to offer to visit the archives for me, is it too late for me to take the offer up?
Again, apologies for not responding sooner.

Canada Lookup Request / RCAF service records look up please
« on: Friday 29 July 11 16:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I know this is a long shot, but I can't think of any other way of finding out the info. I need.

Is anyone planning a visit to Library & Archives Canada, Ottawa who would be willing to check something for me?

A couple of years ago I wrote to the Archives asking about the service records of my husbands late uncle who was killed while serving with the RCAF during WW2.  They very kindly sent me some documents - notes made at his interview when he applied to the force and details of the accident which killed him and the pilot.  They said I could request a copy of his full service record but that this could hold a few pages or a couple of hundred but they were unable to tell me how many there were.  The letter did state I could examine the records in person, but as I live in England there's not much chance of me being able to do that any time soon.

I can't take the chance of ordering the records only to find I can't afford it.  So I was wondering therefore, if anyone was planning a visit to the archives and had time, if there was anyway they could find out how many pages there are so I can work out if I can afford to order them.

As I said, I know it's a long shot, but I have to try.

Can anyone tell me what kind of duties an electrician with the Royal Engineers would have had in WWI?

Thank you very much for your replies.

I am planning a visit to TNA but that won't be for a couple of months, I'll have a look for the diaries then.

I did look at the museum site before posting here but it seems to point researchers to TNA or hiring a researcher.   I will ring them though to see if they will be able to help.

Thanks again

World War One / 1st Garrison Batt. Warwick Reg.

Hi,

Sorry to be a pest but as any of you that read my earlier request will know, I'm trying to find out what my grandfather did during WWI.

SOFO were able to confirm the info. I had about his time with OBLI and gave me the date he transferred regiments.

After being home for a year my grandfather was transferred to 1st Garrison Batt. Royal Warwickshire Regiment on 10th August 1915.  According to the piece on the National Roll, he took part in the engagement at  El Fasher and was present at the entry into Jerusalem.  Is there any way I can confirm this?
I've tried finding information about the batt. online but all I can find is when it was formed and that it went to Egypt.

Sorry, me again!

I think I already know what the answer to this will be but ... is there any way of finding out why my grand-dad was sent home for a year?

Just a note to say a huge thank you to all who helped me with this query.

I did eventually contact SOFO who have just got back to me.  I now know he was with the 2nd Batt. of OBLI and have the dates he transferred to the other regiments.  Sadly I didn't find any personal info. i.e., date of birth or place of enlistment, but hey it's better than knowing nothing at all.

Again thanks to all.

Hi Nigel

I did post a question asking them when his number was issued and when I hadn't received a reply I decided to join the Great War Forum to see if anyone there could help me find out more about his time in WW1.  I mentioned I had asked SOFO about his number and someone posted his joining date for me and said SOFO hadn't received the message - I sent it via their 'contact us' link.

I was going to ask them if/where I could find his earlier records but they charge a fee of £25 which you have to pay before sending the message and I just can't afford this at the moment so will have to leave for now, but thank you very much for your help.
