Australia / Finding the death of Ellen WRIGHT
« on: Friday 29 September 17 03:19 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone
I am still on the hunt for the death of my great great grandmother.   She was born in Antrim, Ireland in 1838, came to Australia as an assisted immigrant with her sister Mary, married John WRIGHT IN 1859 and proceeded to 'go on the road' with him while he laboured at building the railways in Victoria and NSW.
She had 5 sons (1 died aged 10 mths) and 2 daughters. The last son Denis was born in Albury NSW (I do have his birth certificate) in 1878 but I cannot find anything at all about him after this date.
Plus I cannot find Ellen either.    Husband John died in 1903 but his death certificate does not mention his son Denis or his wife.
Any help greatly appreciated.  I have tried the usual suspects ie.  NSW and Victoria bdms, and family search.  Thank you in advance. :)

Hi Sarah
I too am in Australia which is why I'm having so much trouble tracing the family in Canada.
It is Jacquie who has found a lot of information for me, for which I sincerely thank her.
Elizabeth Amelia Smith is the sister of your Joseph Smith, she married William Harris who supposedly drowned at sea but I haven't been able to prove that yet.
Nellie is the daughter of Elizabeth and William and went to Canada in 1910 (I think, I'm not at home at present so cannot check).  Elizabeth and William are my 2 x great uncle and aunty.
William's sister Emma is my great grandmother.  I also can give you more information on Emma's family if you would like it.  Hunter I cannot find anywhere so must assume he died as a toddler.
Therefore I think that your Joseph Smith is also some relation to me but distant!  How great that you have found the connection.
Let me know if you would like to establish contact by email.
Cheers
Lesley

Afternoon all
I have an ancestor George Henry GURNEY who died Mar qtr 1980 registered Northampton and I would like to find an obit or burial notice but haven't been able to access or find anything at the moment.  I have written to the Northampton council but they have no GURNEY's on their burial registers. Have also tried the county crematorium but no luck.
Is there any way I can access 1980 notices please?  I have also tried British Newspapers but they don't seem to go much beyond 1954.   Be grateful for any advice.
Thanks in advance.

HI Chempat
It certainly looks like you have the right family in the census.  Joseph's age on his death certificate was 67 so being 70 on the census isn't such a stretch.
I am not sure about Nellie Harris though, unless she was 12 DAYS old.  Anyway I am hoping that someone with these people in their family will see this and contact me for the certificates.
Thank you for finding the marriage too.
Best wishes
Lesley

Worcestershire / The Harris Family
« on: Sunday 12 July 15 04:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi all
I have two certificates from the GRO that are not our family and I wondered if anyone else out there was researching the Harris family.
The wrong certificates I have are:
Birth:  Nellie Harris b.March 1883 registered Kidderminster, Worcestershire.
Mother: Mary Ann Harris nee GUEST; Father:George Harris, bricklayer.  Address of birth 35 Pleasant Street but the rest is unreadable.

Death: Joseph Harris 23 Nov 1901 @ Birmingham Street, Stourbridge ; brickwork labourer; Registered Stourbridge, Worcestershire/Staffordshire by daughter H.Harris who was present at the death.

I cannot find either of these two people on the 1901 census, and I don't think they are connected to each other but they could be.  If this is your family, let me know and I can email the certificates to you.
Thank you.

Wow Marion what an interesting story.  Your new house certainly has a history.
I haven't been able to find out much about the Haldanes in South Australia, although I haven't looked at them for awhile.
John and Janet Haldane came out to South Australia in 1848 with six of their 8 children, two of whom died very young in Scotland.  As I understand it, John obtained land for farming in 1848, not sure if he bought it or was given it under the land settlement for new settlers.  Possibly the latter as South Australia was settled by new settlers, they did not have convict labourers.
He must have had some money to have bought another property at Nuriootpa, although maybe he was a canny Scotsman and careful with it!  Thank you so much for sending this information.
Cheers

This is brilliant Jacqui thank you so much. There is so much info here. Elizabeth Harris was Nellie,s mother who emigrated from england to spend time with Nellie then ended up in the US. Not sure about the other census entry. I got Hunter's name from the census but haven't been able to find anything about him. Have now got something to work with.  It is so nice to be able to have some closure.  Once again, many thanks your work is much appreciated.

Thank you for the info Sandra.  I was beginning to realise just how hard it is to find people in Canada, almost as bad as Ireland.
I am aware of the '100 year' rule, it is the same in Australia and NZ but I thought as we are now in 2015, I would have been able to find a birth in 1909!
Well the newspapers beckon so will keep looking.
Thanks again.
