Kent / Re: Martha Elizabeth Rose
« on: Wednesday 19 September 18 19:48 BST (UK)  »
I have some further information on Martha Rose from West Wickham, previously referenced in the 1841 census, taken from an index to the parish registers. She was Martha, daughter of George & Elizabeth, born 13th Jan & baptised 11th Feb 1821. Other children were Eliza 1812, Mary 1814, Henry 1815, Ann 1817, Ellen 1824. George was a labourer, but not sure if this is the family you are looking for?

Hi,
I see this query was posted a while ago but I have some more information about the family if that is any help.
This is from the memory of a niece of Ernest Cecil (so may not be completely reliable):
Ernest Cecil (ernie) [1896] Worked on Star newspaper then a toy stall in Bedford Market. Married first wife Gypsey Polly had 2 sons Cecil, and Jeffery. Lived in Hutton as a fork lift driver. Second Marriage was to a Minnie died with no children. Lived first they lived in Hartherley rd. Walthamstow then moved to Raine in essex. Third wife May lived in Norfolk.
Also, there were more than 9 children born to Ernest & Maude - I have 12:
Maude, Dorothy, Ernest, Rose, Thomas, Frederick, Albert, Lenard, Harry, Perry, May, Anne.
I'd be interested in the details from the 1911 census if you still have them.
Kind regards,

Hi,
The index to the parish registers of St John's West Wickham states that she was a spinster when she married John Lane.

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Re: West Wickham Parish Registers - PASKINS
« on: Friday 09 September 11 22:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
An index to the West Wickham parish registers only shows 2 entries for the Paskins family:-

28th June 1899, Peter Paskins, 48, widower, bookmaker, son of Peter, married Sophia Topsy Bladon, 20, spinster, daughter of Len (?) Bladon, both of this parish.

William Charles Paskins, son of Peter & Topsy Sophia, bookmaker, baptised 19th August 1900.

There is a slight possibility that the original writing in the registers was difficult to decipher as there are 2 entries under Parkins which may be the same family:-

Elizabeth Parkins, daughter of Peter & Mary, bookmaker, baptised 3rd March 1886

Mary Parkins, buried age 30, 31st May 1888.

Please let me know if I can help you further by looking in the original registers.

Regards,

I have been able to have a brief look at the registers to check the spelling of Spatchurst & it seems to vary - Ann was baptised 1751 to parents John & Elizabeth Spatchurst, George was baptised 1748 to parents John & Elizabeth Spachurst  & the twins John & Elizabeth were baptised 1754/5 to John & Elizabeth Spachurst (but the c could be a t, the writing is not completely clear).

I hope to look again when I have more time to look at your other queries.

Kent / Re: Lewis James Roffey

Sorry, I don't think I am explaining myself very clearly.  I don't think he drowned then - as you say he was definitely alive in 1883 & later, but from the diary it seems that his family & friends presumed that he had fallen in the river to account for his sudden disappearance.

Do you not think that this is Lewis James who went missing after work?  His mother was Barbara & the correct age is mentioned in the diary - there was another Roffey born in 1850 in West Wickham but she was a girl & so presumably not working in London.  Lewis James was living at home in the 1861 census but not in 1871 & so I would be confident that Mrs Roffey is Barbara, wife of Richard, & young Roffey is Lewis James.

Hi,
I am not connected to the Roffey's, my interest is in West Wickham.  I think you will like this if you have not come across this before.  The source is the diary kept by Ellen Hall who lived in West Wickham late 19th century:

23 Dec  1866  [Story of young Roffey (16) who went missing after leaving his London office - employed by Grippers].

5 Jan 1867  Poor Mrs Roffey has heard nothing of her lost son.  There can be no doubt that he fell into the river.

Could this be when he went to join the Indian army?  When did his family find out he was still alive?

More questions, but an interesting snippet.
