Tipperary / The "Ryan Shone" family of North Tipp
« on: Saturday 02 October 10 14:19 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the locality of a Ryan family in North Tipp that were known as the "Ryan Shones." (Pronounced "show-in.")

I believe they were from the Newport area but might have connections in Rearcross. My great-great grandfather was Thady (Timothy) Ryan Shone, who married Mary Carney in Castleconnell, Co. Limerick, in 1882. He was living in the townland of Coolreiry, Castleconnell at the time. Castleconnell is only a stone's throw from Newport and the Limerick/Tipp border. Thady's father's name was Michael Ryan.

Thady was a labourer and his father Michael was a farmer. I've been told that Thady worked on the Powell farm in Newport. The Powells were Protestants.

Hi Eddie,

I can't figure out how to to reply to your private message!

There are two graveyards in Knocklong. One is in the village, across from my friend's house, near the parish church. The other is up on a hill beside the ruins of a very old tower house, so that graveyard will be much older. I'll get out there and check them out for you as soon as I can.

I heard from my friend in Knocklong and she knows of only one Raleigh family in the locality - Pat (Patrick) Raleigh who lives in Mitchelstowndown, Knocklong. Pat is a farmer so it's unlikely that he has a computer, much less knows how to email, but I will call up there ask! My friend knows where the house is.

Can you message me again and give me as much personal info as you can about the Raleighs in America and where you fit in. I could give that as a letter to Pat with your phone number to introduce you. But once that's done I think the best thing to do is ring Pat yourself and chat to him. I'll have his phone number from my friend once she gets home from holidays.

Hi Eddie,

A friend of mine is from Knocklong and still lives there. (She's in her 50s.) I'll pop her an email now and ask her where the local graveyards are. I sometimes pass through Knocklong (about 25 miles from here.) Next time I am passing through I'll bring the camera and go on a hunt for Raleigh graves for you.  ;)

There were also Raleigh's living in Limerick City who could be relatives too. Mary Raleigh Of White Wine Lane in the parish of St. John's in the city died 23 January 1897. Her husband was Thomas Raleigh, a snuff grinder and they had a daughter, Bridget Raleigh.

(I know all this as Mary Raleigh was god-mother to my great-great grandfather!)
