The shop in the background is Gilchrists - located around what is now Clyde Square. I think many people of a certain age in Inverclyde will have a photograph taken by a street photographer when walking along past the gardens at the old Clyde Square.

Hi

If it is any help to you my 2x Great Granparents were married in Middle Parish in Greenock in 1860 and the Church was Cartsburn Church.

I think middle parish may have related not to a church itself but perhaps a bit like old election wards - now called constituencies.

Carstburn as an area was situated toward the east of the town near the James Watt Dock

Hi Jim

Michael and Catherine were also my Great Great Grandparents. I think I must have the same details as you  but  I have hit a brick wall when I get to the Irish side of things. I do not have any info on the Hayes or Collins side of things I am afraid. Still searching!

My maternal grandmother was a Toomey, her father was John. Where do you come in?

Regards

Hi

You could have a look at this website about Port Glasgow.  http://www.portglasgow4u.co.uk/oldphotos/index.html

My grannny was born and brought up in Dockhead Close which I think was probably near where Bay Street is now and I remember her taking about Hunters Close but can't think where it would be be. I have never heard of Dardanelles Close.

Hi

I think Mirimachi House was orginally the family house of the Hamilton famiy who owned William Hamilton's Shipyard which became part of LIthgow's Shipbuilding in Port Glasgow. The yard was laterly called Lithgow's East Yard.

In the 1960's the building had various uses - it was a function suite, and also if I remember correctly at one time had a doctor's surgery as one of it's tenants.

Scott Lithgow then revamped the building in the late 1970's /1980's and used the Mirimachi Building as additional office space. With the demise of Shipbulding the building fell into disrepair and supermarket now graces the site where the Mirimachi buliding and shipyard once stood.

I know this is not the 1920's but hope you find this of interest.
