I recently bought a New Year's card at an antiques market from an "Evelyn" to Sergeant Major C W Maynard. 509th. Battery. Royal Field Artillery. l believe it dates from WW1 but beyond that l have no knowledge of this man and despite my best efforts via "Ancestry" have been unable to throw any light upon who he was, where he served or whether he survived the War or not, anyone out there with any relevant information l would love to hear from you.

I think this is our man, Charles W Maynard who won several medals for his service in World War I.  In 1912, Charles married Evelyn Lily Lewington in Wallingford, Berkshire in the 4th calendar quarter of 1912, so I believe this is probably the Evelyn who sent Charles the New Year's card.

I cannot yet find a definitive record for Charles' death.

Best wishes, Paul R Hynd

Did you get Neil's parents' names from his death certificate?  Here is more information on them.

Name:   Neil MacLean

Hi Vince

Again, please accept my apologies for the long delay in replying.

I am now picking up this research again.

Thank you very much for your input above - and on the Barra's People Facebook page - this is very helpful.

Best wishes, Paul R Hynd

Hi Anne Marie

Please accept my apologies for the rather long delay in replying!

I am now picking up this research again; copy of Niel McLean's Death Certificate shown below.

Any insights you may have into this I would much appreciate.

Thanks again, Paul R Hynd

Hi!

I've just being doing some research for a friend on my Who's Who Of Hynds group on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/whoswhoofhynds/?fref=ts) into her Hynd family, which intersects with your Hynd family tree.

I've built a basic family tree on Ancestry for at least one branch of the Hynd family from the James Hynd & Agnes Russell marriage down to the present day.

I'm happy to send you an invitation to this tree if you let me know your Ancestry userid.

If you're not on Ancestry, I could send you a Gedcom of the tree if you prefer.

All the best with your Hynd family tree research.

Best wishes, Paul R Hynd

Where did your Barra MacLeans emigrate to?

Vince

Hi Vince.  Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question - I am also having trouble finding any more information on my great grandmother's family the MacLeans from Barra.

Hi Texaco - it might be worth asking the question on the "Who's Who of Hynds" group on Facebook, to see if you can get any help from fellow Hynds:

Well spotted, anabanana !

I've looked at the OPR entry again and again and it always looked like Drumin to me.

Now that I look at again, the dot on the i shows that it is probably Drumui   (that is, like Drumuie, but with no e on the end).

Looking at your map, this is a lot more logical, of course.

Thanks for the correction.

Perhaps George was away on Army service, and Anne and the children were staying with her parents the Dunns / Dons on that evening, which might explain why we can't find any 1861 census entry under Chissel, as the Head of the household's name was Dunn / Don ?!?

I don't know Anne's parents' names, presumably they were still living in Stirling, so worth a look under there perhaps ?

Or maybe with George's family in Devon on census night, so on the 1861 English Census, perhaps under a mistranscribed spelling of their surname  ?
