Dublin / Re: Jesson Thomas Scale & Beam Manufacturer
« on: Tuesday 29 May 18 10:37 BST (UK)  »
I hope this helps to clarify a little (though lots of holes in the records I have found, and you possibly already found this). I would very much like to sort out these families!

Thomas Jesson - a gold and silver smith and scale maker - Thomas Fox Jesson baptised 1779 Dublin son of James Jesson (gold and silver laceman of Dames Street) and Rachel Smith. Used both Thomas Jesson and Thomas Fox Jesson. Named after Thomas Fox (d ca 1784) gold and silver laceman of Parliament Street, former employer of James. This Thomas married Letitia Robinson in 1818. I have found 5 children including James. I believe this is the one that married Eliza Darling in the link you posted. The last record I have found for him is 1837.

Thomas Jesson - a pawnbroker - Thomas Richard Jesson born about 1780 son of Robert Jesson (probably the pawnbroker listed in 1790 newspaper ads). This Thomas married Maria Jane Clavel in 1809.

I don't know if the families are connected. The only link is the common use of the names James, Thomas and Richard. I cannot find parents for James or Robert. I can trace Thomas Fox Jesson and his family down but not further back than his parents. He had brothers Richard (joined the British Army), Horatio (also a silver smith) and James (an auctioneer).

Just a thought but there are several Seventh Day Adventist Churches in Tarawa. I think there is probably a family history centre there.

Hi Valda, Ed and Maryam

Not sure if this will help, but Edward Jackson Fitzsimmons married Eleanora O'Donnell daughter of Elliott O'Donnell and Sarah Vize in Limerick. I believe this is the 1864 marriage and the same Elleanora [transcribed Elleanard!] of the 1901 census.

This Edward appears to be the one mentioned in the London Gazette a number of times.

As to their son Edward John Vize Fitzsimmons, I am wondering if the son born 1866 in Galway and the son aged 20 born in Galway in the 1901 census are the same and there has been some recording error. The family seems to have been based around Limerick normally and not Galway, the birth of both in Galway is what makes me suspicious.

Still trying to trace what happened to them but your posts have been very useful!

I am not sure of the connection between Edward and Walter, I would assume brothers as already mentioned, due to the ages, father's name, connection with Limerick.

ALFRED RICHARD VIZE

Not sure about Charlotte, but Alfred Richard Vize married Mary Hatch Badcock 2 Aug 1839 in Shoreditch. They had three children:
Georgiana Mary Vize b abt Sep 1839 Hackney, m Henry Bradforth 4 Dec 1859 Islington, d abt Apr 1903 Wandsworth
Emily Augusta Vize b abt Sep 1841 Islington, m George Smallman 2 Mar 1860 Battle, d abt Sep 1920 Lambeth
Alfred Edward Vize b 12 Mar 1843 Islington, d abt Apr 1888 Lambeth.

1841 census - Alfred and Mary with baby Georgiana, also Alfred's mother Grace
1851 census - Alfred and Mary with 3 children
1861 census - Alfred "single lodger"; Mary living with son Alfred
1871 census - Alfred living with Charlotte; Mary living with son Alfred

Mary continued to use the name Mary Vize. She appear to be the Mary Vize who died in 1894 in Wandsworth.

There does not appear to be any marriage between Alfred and Charlotte (and in fact several of Alfred's children and grandchildren appear to have made similar arrangements).

ROSIE VIZE

Married Thomas William BRYAN on 14 Jun 1890. They don't appear to have had any children.
There is no evidence that she married Benjamin Babington PEAD as she appears to have stayed married to Thomas - she is named as "wife of Thomas William Bryan" in Ben's will.

She may have married William A MURRAY in 1924?

Benjamin's first wife's name is transcribed in many variable ways. Her maiden name appears to have been DUNN or DENNES depending on whose transcription you use. It is hard to see. Her married name has also been transcribed variably but it looks like "KEY" to me rather than "HEY". Her death was registered in Dec 1896, just before Ben gets together with Rosie.

Australia / Re: Death of James Crombie Kilpatrick

Thanks Muss and JM

have looked at all these leads and they are not correct.

Name is consistently recorded as James Crombie Kilpatrick, occupation consistently recorded as engineer (on all the certificates and newspaper articles I have found). Parents were James Kilpatrick and Mary Petrie; baptised 1820 in Inveresk, Midlothian Scotland. Mary died in in1822 at the home of John Crombie (her brother in law) in Edinburgh after a long illness.

Known addresses:
1820 Inveresk with Musselburgh, Midlothan
1822 House of John Crombie Canongate Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
1841 not located in England or Scotland census
1844 29 Chester Street, Heston(?) Manchester, Lancs
1846 Chorlton, Lancs
1847 Back Gray Street, Manchester, Lancs
1850 Cholton, Lancs
1853 Adelaide (don't have this original certificate this quoted from a SAGHS index)
1855 Sandridge (address not specified)
1865 Sandridge (residential addresses of parties not provided)
1892 Erane? Street Port Melbourne

This one is a real mystery to me. Everything points to James dying between 1855-1865 in Sandridge but I cannot find anything. I am not sure of his employment, apart from the consistent recording of engineer as his occupation. So maybe he travelled?

Thanks JM for all the leads.

Yes I have the 1865 marriage certificate - Christian Kilpatrick married George Norman in Sandridge (now Port Melbourne), father named as James Crombie Kilptarick, mother Mary O'Connor.
Yes also have the birth certificate and James did register the birth in 1855 in Sandridge.

So my best guess of his movements is 1850 left Manchester, arrived Port Adelaide Jan 1851. Stayed in Adelaide until 1853-54 then moved to Sandridge, Victoria before 1855.

The family seems to have stayed in Sandridge until Mary's death in 1892. She is named as relict of James Crombie Kilpatrick in the death announcements in the paper and her death certificate also says widow. I have therefore been focusing on pre 1892, but always possible the family gave this info if Mary was abandoned. I'll have to check the Avoca one again. I did download all the Vic ones that looked vaguely close and all had major differences to my info. Had not seen the SA one.

Thanks

Sue

Australia / Death of James Crombie Kilpatrick

Can anyone help with suggestions to find this elusive death?

James C Kilpatrick came to Australia in 1851 with his wife Mary and 4 young children. He was born in 1820 in Inveresk, Scotland, married Mary O'Connor (originally from Limerick) in Chorlton, Lancs in 1844.

In Australia the family's arrival is noted in the Adelaide newspapers (as Kirkpatrick but confirmed to be the Kilpatrick family) in 1851. He registered the birth of a daughter in Adelaide in 1852 and another in Sandridge (Melbourne) in 1855. This is the last I can find of him.

I have searched death records in all Australian states (so far as they are available on the Internet) as well as deaths at sea in case he was in the merchant navy. Also searched death notices and news items in trove.

In 1865 his daughter married with a letter of permission from her mother (no mention of her father). In 1892 his widow Mary died. I therefore assume he died before 1892 and probably before 1865.

At his birth he was named as James Kilpatrick and may have assumed the additional name Crombie as his mother died when he was an infant and he seems to have been raised by her sister married name Crombie. He has used the name James Crombie Kilpatrick consistently in all the records I have found.

Any ideas on how to find his death? Greatly appreciate any suggestions. Sue

I am trying to find out details of Johanna VIZE and her descendants. Johanna died in 1929 and was probably the mother of Ernest and Walter. Who did Johanna marry? Can marriage records be looked up?

Walter married Constance and they were the parents of Edward Hartnett VIZE and Walter Edward VIZE.

I am trying to find out if they are connected to Thomas Charles VIZE died in Kimberley in 1887.
