Hi Monica,

According to the 1858 marriage registration document, Alexander Thomson's mother's maiden name was Martha Craig. Alexander appears as "Alex" and his age is given as 34 year of age.

Assuming that the age shown for Alexander on the above marriage registration was correct, then he was born circa 1825. At the time of his second wife Elizabeth's death Alexander would have been 60 year old.

I have searched more than once but have been unable to find his death on the ScotlandsPeople website death. I have also tried looking at the death index entries in those cases where no mother's maiden name is shown but have not any luck so far.

Hi Monica,

Thanks for your suggestions.

The 1885 death registration suggested by you for Elizabeth is the correct one! Elizabeth died on 9 September 1885 at 2 Alston Lane, Glasgow. However, her death registration wrongly gives her mother’s maiden name as “Leuchars” instead of Lucas (the correct maiden surname of her mother). Her husband Alexander was the informant but must have been going by memory when it came to filling the death registration paperwork.

i have looked at the two Calton deaths in 1886 and 1889 respectively but neither of these are for my Alexander Thomsons! My Alexander Thomson was 56 at the time of the 1881 Census (he lived then at 2 Alston Lane, Calton).

The search goes on....

Alexander Thomson and Mary Tennent were married on 9th February 1844 in Glasgow Parish. Alexander later married Elizabeth Tennant on 1st October 1858: this marriage took place at Regent Terrace, Glasgow. The 1858 marriage registration mentions that Elizabeth was a widow and mentions that her parents were Charles “Tennant” staymaker (deceased) and Margaret “Tennant”, maiden name Lucas (deceased).

I haven’t yet managed to track down any death record for either Alexander, Mary or Elizabeth on the ScotlandsPeople website but suspect that they died in the Calton or Bridgeton registration districts  of Glasgow.

John Thomson was born on 12 June 1846 (not in 1845) in Glasgow Parish. John was my two times great grandfather.  However, neither his OPR birth record, his marriage registration (1871 marriage to Mary Kyle Greer) nor his death registration give his full name as “John Tennent Thomson”.

Thank you Kloumann and Ian for your posts.

I already knew about James’s earlier life in Straiton (he was born on 14 December 1876 in Carsphairn, Kirkudbrightshire) plus details of his marriage to Agnes Hamilton in 1906 (in Straiton) plus their children Robert (b. 1906); Jean Steel Howatson (b. 1910); Helen Marr Howatson (b. circa 1912).

The other Hewitson which you refer to (James Hewitson b. 1913 in Straiton) is unfortunately not related to James and Agnes Hewitson’s family nor to other Hewitson forebears who lived in the Dalmellington and Carsphairn areas.

Thank you Ian for the OS Map extract. This is exactly the information I needed to locate where the above James plus his son Robert and grandson James latterly lived in Mauchline.

Thanks to both Martin and Monica for your help.

Monica,  I obtained the "Gateside, Cumnock Road, Mauchline" address from James Hewitson's 1984 death certificate.

In addition I have found a newspaper article from The Galloway Gazette 19 Jan 1952 which refers to the sale of livestock at Ayr Auction Mart. Amongst other livestock sales, the article mention the sale of “a non pedigree  calving heffer from Mr. J. Hewatson (sic), Gateside, Mauchline made £93”.

Hi,

I have been trying to find Hewitson forbears who previously lived at Gateside, Cumnock Road, in Mauchline, Ayrshire. i have found evidence of a James Hewitson (son of retired forestry worker Robert Hewitson) living at this address in the early 1980s.

Does anyone know if "Gateside" is the name of a house or a farm cottage and its precise location?

Thanks in advance.

Argyllshire / John Campbell Birnie - Born at Corran Lighthouse 21 Aug 1871
« on: Thursday 09 January 20 20:50 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find more about John Campbell Birnie.

John was the younger brother of my great grandfather, George Robertson Birnie. My great grandfather was born at Covesea Skerries lighthouse, near Lossiemouth; latterly he became a foreman in the repair fitting department of Alexander Stephen & Sons' shipyard in Govan, Glasgow.

John was born on 21st August 1871 at Corran Lighthouse, Ardgour in Argyllshire. He married Jane Watson on 23rd November 1893 at Carskey Waterfront, Southend in the Mull of Kintyre and died on 1 October 1937; at 59 Crowhill Road, Bishopbriggs. Jane died on 8 July 1942 at 59 Crowhill Road, Bishopbriggs. I would be interested to hear from any of their descendants who would have lived in the Dunbarton, Glasgow and Bishopbriggs areas.

Hi Sue,

I read your post with great interest. My great great great grandfather was Robert Hewitson, husband of Nicholas Muirhead. I understood that Nicholas' brother James had married a Janet Hewitson but I see that you refer to a Jane Howatson instead.

I do not know much regarding Robert Hewitson's siblings other than he was the 9th of 11 children of James Hewetson and Mary Kerr from Penpont in Dumfriesshire. It would be good to learn more about Robert and his siblings.

Wales / Sealed Will of John Birnie Walker - Died 1942
« on: Tuesday 16 April 19 18:04 BST (UK)  »
Good afternoon all,

Please can you help me with the following query. I have been trying to access the will of the above Scotsman. He was who was a Glasgow based accountant.

According to the entry for this gentleman in the 1942 England & Wales National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), Mr Walker of 408 Albert Drive, Pollokshields, Glasgow died on 2 May 1942. Confirmation of James King Walker (brother) and John Neil Orr, writers (i.e. solicitors). Sealed Llandudno 25 June.

From what I can determine, John had relatives who lived in Llandudno; his aunt, Mary Jane McNeill and her husband Lachlan McNeill, who are both buried in St Tudno's Churchyard, Llandudno.

I approached the England & Wales record office in order to obtain a copy of the will but was sent a standard letter which did not begin to answer my query and point me in the right direction.

Is any one able to help me?

Best wishes,

Birnro
