Rutland Lookup Requests / Re: Suter

Hi Charlie.  Thanks for your post.  I haven't found a link with the large cluster of SUTERs in the Rutland area.  I suspect they are linked with those from Notts but have no evidence.  There is also an early cluster in the Sussex/Hampshire area - again no known links.

I am related to a large cluster in the Dorset/Wiltshire/Somerset areas - mainly from Mere, Stourton, Silton and Bourton.  A number left this area in the mid 1800s for Tredegar and Ebbw Vale in Wales.  There are also smaller clusters in Bristol and Nuneaton - all originating from Dorset.  The Dorset connection goes back to the mid 1500s.  There is (or was) a family in York but most from the city are from elsewhere - possibly your ancesters.

Hope that helps

Wiltshire / Abraham SUTER & Mary FORD of Mere, Wiltshire

It looks likely that Abraham Suter & Mary Ford married in Silton, Dorset in 1702.  The Parish Register is barely legible and it is impossible to read Mary's name.  However, there is good evidence in the Mere Churchwardens Accounts and from some of the wills that this marriage did take place in 1702.  The couple lived in Wolverton - between Zeals and Mere.

As is usual for this period, there are a lot of similar names - mostly William, John and Richard - and I would now like to piece together the FORD tree for this era.  There are other FORD/SUTER marriages and lots of mentions in the various wills of the period.

Would like to hear of any other researchers into this topic.

Just a note of warning about SUTERs in South Wales.  There appears to be at least 2 clusters of SUTERs but not apparently connected.  My cluster is located around the Bedwelty, Tredegar and Newport areas but with a few strays in Cardiff and Neath.  They came from the Dorset/Wiltshire border area (Mere/Zeals/Silton/Bourton) in order to look for work in the coal mines and steel mills.  My grandfather was born in Ebbw Vale but the family moved back to Dorset - probably for health reasons.

I don't really have a Florence Suter in my tree that could connect with your Beard - just wanted to save you some unnecessary research effort!  There are not many independent clusters of SUTERs in England and Wales - Dorset/Wiltshire, Sussex, and Nottinghamshire appear to be the main ones.  I have a huge amount of information relating to the Dorset/Wiltshire cluster.
