Have you tried contacting the church directly? (if you know where it took place).  I did this successfully with some Scottish Catholic baptisms.

In the above article it mentions that William was married at St Mary's Church, Gateshead in 1821, and 20 years later was widowed with 3 daughters.  It also says that he served in the army in India in 1811.

My mum's half brother (born to my grandmother before she married my grandfather) always went by his biological father's surname, even though my grandad brought him up.  The biological father was named on his baptism in Scotland, and I wonder whether some sort of maintenance payment might have been established, although I don't think father & son kept in touch.

There is an Eccleston family living at 186 Cobden Street, Ancoats in 1911:-

Sarah Ann b.1868 / Head / Widow
Catherine b.1887 / Daughter / Single
John Edward b.1891 /Son / Single
Thomas b.1894 / Son / Single
Joseph b.1896 / Son / Single

All born Manchester

Sarah Ann has crossed out that she's been married for 25 years.

I"m a bit late to this thread, but was wondering if it might be a good idea to put it on the DNA board, where there will be people who can help you analyse your unknown matches, and maybe get some clues as to your birth father's identity.

Good luck with your search, and I hope this doesn't affect your relationship with your dad too much.
