Thanks for the website links, I have registered on UK press online, this will come in very useful.  Also had a quick look at St. Augustine Lodge - some useful information here also I think.

The Machadoink site I had found and have used alot already, some brilliant information on this site.

Thanks for your help :-)

Hi

Does anyone have information/pictures regarding the following:

William Beer (1786-1869) Owner of Beer & Co Brewery, Canterbury - would like to know if he was married more than once?  Married to Sarah Fish (17/08/1830), states he is a widower, but can't find any record of previous marriage.  Also know he was made bankrupt in May 1844 before going into partnership with his sons.

George Beer (1817-1890) Owner of George Beer & Co (Star Brewery), Canterbury

Alfred James Beer (1825-1892) Owner of Beer Original Brewery, Canterbury - also think he may have been a local councillor in Canterbury and Sheriff in 1869?

Osmond Augustine Beer (1831-1876) Possible Owner of Osmond Beer, Canterbury

Herbert Beer (1834-1887) May have owned a brewery in Canterbury, but not sure.  Married Julie Ann Howard in 1858 Canterbury

Would be grateful for any information about any of these relatives.

Hi Suz

Thanks for that.  I am looking up Census records using Genes Reunited website and for some strange reason I am getting no results for Jane or William Collins in 1851 Census in Ruckinge?

Have searched John Collins and have found Census record and as you have indicated he is a farm labourer living with John Swaffer and family.

Not really sure how at the moment I will find any link between him and Jane?  He could be another son or even her younger brother I suppose?

Thanks for help though  :)

Hi Rosie

Don't have copy of his marriage certificate unfortunately.  I have the transcript and it all gets a little confusing here.

I know he married Amelia Ann Moon (who was previously married to Henry Moon - 29.04.1861), however William's name is recorded as Collings and not Collins.  They married Q4 1870 West Ashford, that's all I have so far.

I have looked on several other websites to find a record of their marriage without much success.

I will continue to investigate.  :)

I am looking for information on William Collins b. 1826 or 1827 Ruckinge

I have found him (I think) on 1841 Census with his Mother Jane Collins b. 1806

I find him again in 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 which was easy because I know he married Amelia Moon.  I can't seem to find him on any Census records for 1851 or 1861.  I believe he died in 1902.

His year of birth for some of the census records does change slightly, but this appears to be quite a common thing.

However, I have searched everywhere I can think of including http://www.hastingleigh.com/OPR/Ruckinge-Baptisms.html to try and find a record of his or his mothers baptism, but no luck.

I have nothing else to go on.  Is it possible that they were not baptised and if so how do I go about tracing their births?

Can anybody help?  This would be much appreciated.

Thanks everyone for the advice so far, this has all proved very useful.  I have checked the census records as suggested and they all seem to fit very well with the information I already have.

This led me to discovering that Henry's mother Sarah did indeed marry Richard Reeves.

Trunkybun1 I have some information on Sarah's father and grandfather for you.

Father: George Moon baptised 05.02.1786 Brookland and married Elizabeth Shrewsbury 10.07.1815 New Romney no death information as yet.

Grandfather: Thomas Moon no baptism record, married Jane Maybourne 10.04.1784 Romney Marsh no death information as yet.

Other information about Sarah's brothers and sisters I got from

http://freereg.rootsweb.com/

and searched the parish records for Moon baptisms.

Thank you bearkat for the links - I knew about the Mid Kent Marriages website, but the Romney Marsh baptisms will come in very useful.

If anyone has any idea what happened to Henry Moon I would be most grateful, I am really stuck as to where to look as every death record for a Henry Moon doesn't seem to match the age he would have been from his baptism record?

Thanks everyone

Thank you so much for the replies - I will be following all these new leads up.

I am still a novice when it comes to tracing my family tree, so all this help is greatly appreciated.  Will keep you posted.

Thanks

Does anyone have any information on Henry Moon b. 1836 Brookland, New Romney
He was baptised on: 02.10.1836 Brookland, his mothers name is Sarah Moon and it states he was illegitimate.

I know he married Amelia Ann Smith on 29.04.1861 in New Romney and they had three children: Lenora Jane Moon b.1866, William Collins Moon b. 1868 and Benjamin Thomas Collins Moon b. 1869.

Amelia then married a William Collins in 1870 and they had four children.  I did doubt the parentage of William Collins Moon and Benjamin Collins Moon as it seems strange that they would be named Collins (Moon) and then Amelia marries a William Collins!!

William Collins Moon is my great grandfather and I have a copy of his birth certificate which states Henry Moon as his father!

However, I can not find any records anywhere of Henry Moon, he does not seem to appear on any census records and I can't find a record of his death.

I am finding information on his mothers family and believe her parents were George Moon and Elizabeth Shrewsbury both from the Romney Marsh area.

I would be grateful if anyone has any information at all on Henry Moon.

Thanks.

Hi Flossie

I have just joined RootsChat and have just seen your message about John William Moon Collins.  My Grandmothers name was Fanny (Ann) Amelia Moon Collins (or Collins Moon) and John was her older brother.

I don't know that part of the family at all, I only have the names of the children and years of birth.  I believe that they probably still live in the Ashford area.  I only have a little information so far on your actual grandparents John and Lilian.

I am also researching as far back as possible through both John's parents - William Collins Moon and Emily Jane Spearpoint (our great grandparents) and have found some interesting information as to how the family name became Moon Collins or Collins Moon.  I also have lots of information about John's brothers and sisters if you would like to know anything.

My side of the family is quite confusing as my grandmother married a Sidney James Collins - this Collins family come from the Marden area of Kent.

Let me know if there is anything I can help with.
