Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Re: Alternatives to Parish Records- 16th Century?

Thank you both.
What kind of info might I find in Nuneaton Manor 'surveys', 'rentals', 'court rolls' etc. Would this be specific to a manor house, or the area of Nuneaton would you imagine?

I would happily spend a day going through these in the British Library if it's potentially a worthwhile exercise.

Thanks Watson.

As far as I know there are no Bishop's transcripts.

I haven't heard of the Protestation returns; I'll look into that.

William Mortimer (who I believe lived 1628-1699) was a labourer. I have no record of the occupations of his siblings or father William.

I have seen something about a 'Constable Rental Survey' of 1543-1546 in Nuneaton mentioned in local family history websites, but can find no record of these or clues as to how I can view them...

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Alternatives to Parish Records- 16th Century?

Good afternoon,

I have reached an apparent dead-end with my family research due to water-damaged records in Nuneaton.

The earliest record I have is the burial of my great x 8 grandfather William Mortimer, in 1672, recorded in the St Nicolas register.

A fellow family researcher told me William Mortimer married Mary Townsend in 1627 and they had a son William in 1628, however I have been unable to find these records in the register due to illegibility.

I have proof of my ancestors living in Nuneaton throughout the mid to late 1600s due to Hearth Tax records, the parish register and Wills. Getting further back than William, however, is proving very difficult.

Does anyone have any suggestions of sources I could check? I don't really know where to start. I live in London so have access to the British Library and National Archives if that helps. I would be happy to travel to Warwickshir, and happy sifting through any sorts of rolls / records/ registers etc, even just to prove the absence or presence of Mortimers in Nuneaton in the 1500s.

Any help is much appreciated.
Ryan

Good evening,

I'd really appreciate some help deciphering the highlighted entry in the image attached. I really struggle reading this old form of writing. It is a 16th century Marriage record in Nuneaton parish register.

Many thanks,
Ryan

Hi djp.mortimer, thanks for reminding me of a hobby I can do while in isolation! Been a few years since I researched my family tree and now is a good time to start up again.

I had a look at your site, it's really nice and that's a huge abundance of Mortimer info! I'd love to connect my family branch to the wider Mortimer tree, hence why I originally started. I don't suppose you know of any Mortimer researchers with family in the Leicestershire / Nottinghamshire / Warwickshire area? Back as far as 1626, this is where my ancestors were based.

Thanks ThrelfallYorky also and yes that's what I did and loved finding out so much about my ancestors, back to the early 17th Century. Unfortunately records then in Nuneaton, Warwickshire became water damaged and so it's unlikely I'll ever trace my direct link back to the Middle Ages that I'm really passionate about. But like I say, enjoyed all the research I did.

Thank you both for your help. I've got the free Ancestry trial so that's helping to a degree.

That's great info Ciderdrinker. I am picking up after about 3 years of hardly researching, some of that I do remember coming across but it is hard to get my head around it all due to a number of William Mortimers being in Nuneaton at the time.

I do know that my ggggggg grandfather Edward Mortimer died in 1718 as a maltster- have seen his will and inventory. A shift from cordwainer to maltster seems like an odd move to me? And hence this may not be the same Edward, meaning that this William may not be my ancestor...

Seems very hard to get concrete proof at that time period and I really don't want to make assumptions, as inevitable as that may be
