Somerset / CAN ANYONE HELP? Any history on the Deane family of Bleadon
« on: Friday 11 April 14 12:04 BST (UK)  »
I am researching a Nathaniel Dean(e) who lived and was buried in the Parish of Bleadon.  He was left copyhold estate by his father Robert Deane in his Will of 1654, proved 1655.  A monumental inscription says Nathaniel was 72 when he was buried in 1724, giving d.o.b. 1652.  The Rector of the Parish was asked in 1900 to search for Nathaniel and found him in the Overseer's (of the poor) Register in 1712/13, being the first to sign at vestry meetings giving the Rector to take the view that Nathaniel was "the most important person in the village at that time."  The Rector believed Nathaniel had left the village until he found a headstone buried one foot under the earth face down with boulders on top as if to hide it and noted Nathaniel's burial in 1724 but this is not recorded in the Parish register. This is a mystery I am trying to solve, also I am trying to connect Nathaniel to the Deane family of Weare.

I am researching a Nathaniel Deane who was living in Bleadon in 1712. He is mentioned in the Registers and Overseers Books for the Parish of Bleadon.  No date of his burial was entered in the Parish Register and it was assumed he had moved elsewhere after the death of his wife in 1727, believed to be Anne Deane.  During an excavation in the churchyard in September 1900 under the auspices of the Rector James Barnes Brearley a headstone was discovered one foot under the earth facing downwards.  The stone was lifted, dating from 1658  there was a reference to Nathaniel Deane buried 5 March 1724 or 1727.  This information is from research done by the Rector on behalf of a member of the Deane family.  I believe the stone was placed in an upright position and I am wondering if anyone is familiar with the churchyard and whether the old headstones are still in place.

Thank you John for that.  I did eventually get a reply from Biggleswade Library on this, and it seems no-one in the family knew how old she was.  Her death cert, informed by her granddaughter says she was 81, her burial says 97, she was baptised 26 Dec 1798, and a birth date was given for 4 Dec 1798, these we found on familysearch her maiden name being Foster , common enough but she and her female siblings were also given the middle name "Yarley", the maiden name of her mother.

I had a reply yesterday on the burial of Jane's husband Thomas Jeeves who died in 1871, which took place in Dunton.  Can you tell me if that would also have been a churchyard burial or was there a town/village cemetery at that date?

And one last query, do you know where or if burial plot references are recorded for the Bedfordshire cemeteries?  I hail from West Yorkshire and our local cemetery has the plot number and from that we have found many other relatives buried who we may not of otherwise known a connection with.

Thank you David, that is very useful.  I will check where my nearest LDS centre is, not sure there is one near my home.

Thanks for that information Steve.  My problem is that she died in 1890 so the Family history transcripts would not help in this case.  But I appreciate you trying to help.

Thanks Elwyn for the link to that Irish site.  I have searched on the Irish Family History website and did eventually find a baptism for my gt grandmother Catherine, born 1854/5, baptised in Aclare.  I was hoping that records would exist for earlier baptisms.

Can anyone tell me if there are R.C. parish registers for Aclare going back to the early 1800's.  My 2xgt grandparents Lawrence MacIntyre and Mary Goulding (Goulden?) were from Sligo, born about 1829-1833.  If these early records exist where would they be held?

Can anyone tell me where burials took place for someone who died in Sandy in 1890.  My 3 x gt grandmother Jane Jeeves died on 5 Aug 1890.  I understand the local cemetery opened in 1891.  Where would the registers be held for burials before it's opening.
