Hello petal01

I now definitely know that the person I am researching was born in 1878 and married to Catherine O'Toole, as shown in the reply from dillonking. Seems that there were at least two Peter Martins working for Guinness! Thanks anyway for your kind reply :)

Hello Tara

I will be away for a few weeks, but when I get back I will take your advice and look on the appropriate boards together with the Dublin Electoral Roll for some of his relatives

Many thanks again

Just to help me make a tree of the various relatives/cousins, etc that are descended from him and his wife

The only evidence we have for his birthplace in Cavan and his links to John Traynor in Liverpool is what he told my mother and grandmother. This man died in 1938 and we have no documentation, so we have little to go on

Thanks Shane

Yes, I think that the 1901 Census entry points to a different family. It is quite likely that his wife Catherine's surname is O'Toole, as I know that there are distant cousins of that name. I believe one of her relatives (brother) was killed in WW1 and the children went into an industrial school in Birmingham. As they got older, they subsequently moved to Ontario, Canada

Thanks everyone for your replies. This chap is my maternal grandfather and was something of an adventurer in his early life. Although married and living in London in 1906, he used to visit Liverpool regularly, staying for months at a time. We know that he had relatives there (Scotland Road?) perhaps even another family. He also spent seven years in the bush in Australia panning for gold and silver before coming back to the UK.

Thanks Tara. Actually he was my grandfather.

The 1911 census shows him as being 32 and his wife Kate being 26 living at Rialto Cottages, Usher's Quay. On the 1901 census though, they are both 26 and living at Redfern Terrace, Merchant's Quay. It also lists a one-year-old daughter called Christina who does not appear on the 1911 census.

If both of these records are for the same people, then it would appear that their oldest daughter died. I shall keep plodding away.

Many thanks again Tara for your help   ;)

Dublin / Peter Martin

I am researching Peter Martin, born in 1878. He may have been born in Ireland or possibly even in Boston USA. I know that he served in the Worcestershire Regiment and saw action in the Boer War, and also in Salonika in WW1. Before and after WW1, he worked in the brewhouse for Arthur Guinness in Dublin.

I believe that he had various cousins in Canada (Hamilton/Burlington) and Birmingham UK, by the name of O'Toole and Burgess.  Any info would be greatly appreciated  :)

I am researching John Traynor who was born in Cavan (possibly Bailieborough) around 1861. I understand that he moved to Liverpool when still a boy, and subsequently served in the merchant navy and then in the marines. He also spent seven years in Australia, before returning to the UK.

I believe that he had family in the Liverpool area and was related to another member of the Traynor family who was famous for being cured of first world war injuries at Lourdes.

I would be very grateful for any info about him  :D
