hi, ive been looking through the census,s trying to find herbert edgar thornley/aird in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 but theres no trace of him so i cannot either prove or disprove if its him or not but it does seem proberble as clara was in skipton in 1871 at the time of his birth and the family moved to the manchester area around 1873 clara lived in that area till her death in 1886, her husband edwin and daughter jessie moved back to skipton sometime before 1901 but its likley that herbert stayed in manchester, ill have to purchase the birth cert to find out one way or another if its him or not ive got the number off bmd...thanks for your help...chris

hi, thanks for your reply its nice to get someone elses take on this i do have access to the census etc but thanks anyway, i have come across the herbert edgar thornley you mentioned and did wonder if this could be the one im looking for, its possible he was born out of wedlock as her daughter sarah 1866 was, clara wed in 1872 and i know clara was living in skipton in 1871 with her sister ill look more into the herbert edgar and see what i come up with thanks for your help its much appreciated...chris

my gg grandma clara thornley wed edwin glover aird on the 1881 census they are living in ardwick manchester along with daug sarah son herbert and 2 younger daughters mary and jessie on this census herbert is given as being 8 years old so should have been born around 1873 in skipton yorks, i have looked for him on the 1891 and the 1901 but cannot find him anywhere i know where the rest of the family are just not him the problem lies with the bmd i can find sarah, mary and jessie no problem but there dosnt appear to be a birth registered for him and no death either so did he exsist? according to the 1881 census he did i just dont know where to go from here. ANY SUGGESTIONS....chris

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / curtis / cutler ashby de la zouch
« on: Wednesday 09 August 06 19:43 BST (UK)  »
i have now descovered that my elizabeth curtis 1847 ashby de la zouch was infact registered at birth as elizabeth cutler/cuttler daug of joseph cutler she became elizabeth curtis sometime between her birth and marraige in 1864 i thought the surname could have been transcribed wrong but it was cuttler for over 30 years on the census and the whole family of brothers and sisters of joseph also changed their names to curtis so obviously its not human error which now leads me to think there may have been a scandal in this family sometime between 1847 and 1864 so what im asking the readers of rootsweb is have any of you come across a scandal that involved a cutler/cuttler from leicestershire possibly into derbyshire and even possibly into manchester as there are cutler connections there also.
it could be something like a crimal that was deported, hung etc i would have thought it was something serious for the whole family to change their names.

it appears that the elizabeth curtis ive been looking for (see previous ads) may have been registered as cuttler and that the family were known as that name till around the 1860,s when it became curtis and there was a elizabeth cuttler registered in ashby in 1847. the mother to this elizabeth remarried after her husband joseph died to a man called thomas redfern in 1855 what i would like to know is if on the marriage registers for ashby does it say elizabeth cuttler widow or elizabeth curtis widow that wed thomas redfern i would like to confirm once and for all if this cuttler family is actually my curtis family so if anyone has access to the marriage registers for ashby de la zouch could you please look this marrige up for me please and the baptisims of the children of elizabeth and joseph cuttler/curtis they were henry 1844 and elizabeth 1847 all the other children were born at manchester.many thanks...chris

im trying to find the birth of elizabeth curtis c 1846/7 ashby de la zouch without much luck ive tried to obtain the birth cert but they carnt find it i have her marraige cert and it gives her father as joseph curtis a deceased labourer.
elizabeth wed edward hart in 1864 so her father must have died between 1846/7 and 1864 ive looked on the census for 1851 and 1861 but no elizabeth and josephs come up together.
if anyone out there has access to the parish registers for ashby would they be so kind as to look for a baptisim for me please, there was a eliza curtis 1847 at ashby i would like to confirm if this eliza and my elizabeth were one and the same person.
i have all details of elizabeth after she wed but can find nothing before then and nothing that links her to her father joseph hopefully the baptisims would do that..thanks chris
