Durham / Re: Bambrough Family
« on: Friday 05 November 21 02:37 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for the info Fred, and for the reply to PM.

Just for others/everyone I'm refreshing myself on Bambrough/Bamburgh history to help with our family tree research. I've complied these interesting facts about Bambrough/Bamborough/Bamburgh in Northumberland.

Bamburgh Castle. It was originally a Celtic/British fort called Din Guardi, and was possibly the capital of the Celtic/British kingdom of Bernicia/Gododdin ca 420-547. Some think the castle was the location of Lancelot's Joyous Garde of King Arthur stories. Passed between Britons and Angles 3 times ca 547-590. It was the seat of the former kings of Bernicia/Northumberland Ida Fflamddwyn "flamebearer"(547-559) & Hussa & Aethelfrith (ca 593-604) from ca 547/590. (Ida's wife/queen was Bearnoch.) Aethelfrith passed the castle to his wife Queen Bebba in ca 600/615 (from whom the castle takes its name Bebban-burh). (In Bede Bebba is just called "a former queen" without any mention of Aethelfrith. so she might not have been Aethelfrith's wife, she might have been Ida's, and some other earlier queen. I think I saw somewhere that her name is Celtic/British?) From 867 it may have been the de facto capital of an independent north-east Northumbria. Destroyed by Vikings in 993. Robert de Mowbray "Percy" ("pierce eye") owned the castle in 1095. The castle was owned by the English monarch between 1095 to ca 1191. The Forsters were owners/lords of the castle in later times (1191-...). Philip of Oldcoates controlled the castle in King John's reign. The castle was included in the property of friars seized on the behalf of Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The Forster's owned the castle from the mid 1500s to ca 1700. It was sold to Lord Crew Bishop of Durham in 1704 and he placed the castle in the hands of a board of trustees chaired by Thomas Sharp Archdeacon of Northumberland, and then by his son John Sharp. The castle was bought by industrialist William Armstrong in 1894, and the Armstrongs still own it.

Bamburgh village, Northumberland. A late medieval village that developed near the castle. St Aidan's Church, Bamburgh was a church built built by St Aidan outside the castle wall in 635. Bamburgh is known for its association with Grace Darling.

Bamburgh Lighthouse was built in 1910.

Bamburgh Parish has 2 chapelries and 22 townships.

Bamburgh Beast, a gold plaque discovered in archaeological excavations at Bamburgh Castle.

Bamburgh Sword, disovered in archaeological excavations in Bamburgh Castle. Might be Ida's sword maybe?

Bamburgh Dunes, a site of special scientific interest.
Bamburgh Coast and Hills is also a site of special scientific interest.

Bamburgh Clinic, an extension of St Nicholas Hospital, Newcastle.

HMS Bamborough Castle was the name of a Royal Navy corvette in 1944.

Bamburgh Research Project investigates the archaeology and history of the castle and area.

Famous Bambroughs include:
Renford Bambrough, a British philospher, 1926-1999.
Sean Bambrough, free lance journalist in South Africa.
John Bamborough, British scholar of English literature and founder of Linacre college (Oxford).
Waltheof I ealdorman of Bamburgh ca 1006.
Laura Bambrough "L'Wren Scott", American fashion designer, costume designer, model, 1964-2014.
I could add myself Sean Bambrough, an independent researcher of history and mysteries and some other subjects who has made a number of seeming possible discoveries including Atlantis capital city (Tiahuanaco), and Alexander the Great's tomb (Taposiris Magna).
My father said his father said we are descended from a "Prussian prince" or "German prince" via a marine engineer, and another Bambrough from Newcastle said his family have the same tradition. Though I haven't been able to find any such link, so it might be a myth/mistake.
Bamburgh Baronets 1607-1631.

Similar names:
Bamberg a town/city in in Bavaria (Germany), also an early ruling dynasty of Austria, and name of Jewish Catholic prince bishops of Bamberg.
Bemborough (as in Sir Robert Bemborough who was at the Combat of the Thirty in 1351. He relied on the Prophecy of Merlin. His surname may be from either Pembrooke or Brandebourch).
Banbury, a town in England.
Brandenberg, north-east Germany, once part of Prussia under the Hohenzollerns.

Unfortunately I don't live in UK or Northumberland so I can't go and do research at the Northumberland and Durham Family History Society there, and other similar places/organisations in the UK.

I've found out that there is a contradiction in sources and am not sure which is right. I now have two different alleged lines of descent as follows:

11. Thomas Bambrough + Ann Hood b 1669
10. Thomas Bambrough 1703 + Margaret Nixon 1705
9. Thomas Bambrough 1721-1800 + Margaret Jennings 1725-1762
8. John Bambrough b 1754/1755 + Isabel Forster of Fellside 1753 (m 1755/1781?)
7. John Bambrough 1786/1787/1788/1789 + Dorothy Storey (m 1817)
6. William Bambrough 1820 + Elizabeth Beylass
5. William Bambrough 1851 + Ann Swallow (m 1873)
4. James Bambrough 1887-1918 + Margaret Beatrice Newman 1886-1928/1931 (m 1908)
3a. William Ernest (Laurence) Bambrough 1910-1984 + Ruby Constance Wildermoth 1911/1912-1979 (m 1934 NZ)
(3b. William Ernest Bambrough + Anne Patience Mcleman 1931-1984)
(2a. K... G... Bambrough (my father) + J... A... Wright)
2b. K... G... Bambrough (my father) + Jennifer Mary "Edwards" 1946-2020
1. S... W... Bambrough (me).

8. John Bambrough 1753-1833 + Elizabeth 1765
7. William Bambrough 1794-1876 + Margaret Thompson 1801-1863 (m 1819 Durham)
6. James Bambrough 1825-1888 + Dorothy Heslop 1830-1900 (m 1850 Durham)
5. William A Bambrough 1851-1916 + Ann Swallow 1850-1904 (m 1873 Durham)
4. James Bambrough 1888-1918 + Margaret Beatrice Newman 1886-1931 (m 1908)
3a. William Ernest (Laurence) Bambrough 1910-1984 + Ruby Constance Wildermoth 1911/12-1979 (m 1934 NZ)
(3b. William Ernest Bambrough + Anne Patience Mcleman 1931-1984)
(2a. K... G... Bambrough (my father) + J... A... Wright)
2b. K... G... Bambrough (my father) + Jennifer Mary "Edwards" 1946-2020
1. S... W... Bambrough (me).

Which just goes to show I have to be more careful with my sources etc. Unfortunately I am not able to go buying all the birth certificates etc which makes it less easy to have proof of parentage etc. The second one version is from Mormon site.

(In the first version I had difficulty finding out the surname of Isabel of Fellside. There were three records of Isabels of Fellisde marrying a John Bambrough in roughly the same year. Isabel Archer, Isabel Maugham, Isabel Forster.)

I still can't see/find any "Prussian prince" or "German prince" anywhere in my grandfather's ancestry, nor any marine engineer, as supposed in our family tradition. I think it must be wrong/fictitious. Except that Shauny Bambrough from Northumberland said they have the same prince tradition in their family too, which makes me think/feel there must be something to it. My father said his father told him we are descended from a "Prussian prince" or "German prince" via a marine engineer. I have thought maybe "German" was a mistake for Germanic/Teutonic Anglo-Saxon Bernician/Deiran Northumbrian Angle, but it doesn't seem likely. The genealogical sites only seem to go back to 1600s and not any earlier. Recently I wondered if my grandfather's middle name Ernest might point to the Saxon/Thuringian Ernestine Wettins but I can't find any link. About 10 years ago I met at a group meeting a lady here in NZ who once came from the UK, and when I mentioned the Prussian/German prince story she thought it might be the dwarf Polish Count Joseph Boruwlaski who was in Northumberland, but I can't see any link there.

I once found in google search a page in a genealogical site with photos etc with some woman who married a Bambrough which looked like it might be the German/Prussian link but I can't remember her name and can't find it searching again, and since google changed their search to worse than it was before I can't find it in my search history. I think she had some name like Isobel or Lutetia or something.

Not sure what you mean by "unfair genetic testing requirements imposed by authorities". You cannot demand genetic testing of another person (only a court could mandate that), but you can organise genetic testing of yourself. This may give you some matches which you could then follow up. There's a separate board here on RC which deals specifically with queries about genetic testing.

I was not demanding any testing of anyone.

I don't want to test myself because i am wary of giving info like that to the secret powers that be, and also because it is better with the 2 samples from my mother and (deceased) commonly assumed grandfather that we wanted to get tested (i mean better with the direct daughter and "father" than with me the grandchild).

My mother gave me the samples and i took them in to the dna diagnositics local Wellington/Hutt collection place but they messed me around saying i had to get signature of mother, refused to take the samples, had to be appointment, they said i had to send the samples direct to Auckland myself, etc. Then weeks/months after wards my mother got the lung cancer and no its on hold for "5 years getting over the lung operation" and "mother can't deal with it now [even merely signing a note and me calling by to pick up the samples again]". I went to the law centre asking if i had any rights to find out who my real grandfather is and they said sorry there are no such rights. In other words it was the DNA diagostics and the local collection place nurse (and now also my mother) who dictate to me.
I can't remember what else i may have also meant about unfair.

The red cross also stuffed me around with ww2 pow search. They refuse to give any lists of pows. They dictate that i had to have a name or else they refuse any info/help.

So i maintain that i am right not wrong to be offended by that there are unfair limitations placed by the powers that be.

Thanks Scouse, i'll add it to the list of camps. Though the family tradition is clear that it was in Nottingham[shire?] not Yorks.
This map of Notts camps i half-made excluding one or more additions since

The right camp is probably Wollaton park near Trowell going by the family history timeline i pieced together.

I recently compiled this list of online genealogy resources for a friend (and also myself and anyone else) :

Thanks folks. As usual in my "life" it is all on hold now due to not able to do anything much in present situation* and condition (and also due to other things i need/want to do, and due to NZ vs UK location/distance, and due to poor UK pow records, and due to the p.o.w. records restrictions and also unfair genetic testing requirements imposed by authorities/elite, and due to extended "family" puritanical refusal to help, and due to my mothers lung cancer operation "5 years" recovery, etc*). When i was able and trying they hindered me and now i am not able (unless things change soon). But any info/ideas (or help) anyone has that may help are still appreciated.

* [including fluoridated water forced on me here, and meter reader picking my door lock, and locksmiths refusing to do my locks, etc]
* [also including broadband fibre optics campaign/changes and windows 7/8/10 campaign/changes (i only able to have xp and dialup), virus attack from person on theapricity, etc]

When i am able to I need to get together a list of all the suggested italian/uk/ww2 organisations, and sites, and forums, etc and then go through trying them.

Sorry i didn't realise there were other threads/topics on this already (don't know why i hadn't searched before i posted mine). My one on here is the top one:

That is start of a personal list of resources/references, some just picked up now from the other threads here.

Woudn't it be funny if we were related? Though i guess one pow is not likely to have associated with more than one woman.

Apparently it is Ethel (Ettie) Newman/Thirkell, not Hettie/Nettie [Henrietta/Henriette/Harriet/Harriette] Newman/Thirkell.

Ok Thanks Aghadowey. I guess the internet does tend to make even me unrealisingly impatient. (I also have had no response to the other two topics on Italian pow and on Bambrough.)
(I know/knew that the number of times read includes number of readings by same people including me.)

Thanks for the site link RJ.

I do still need/want to be able to find the map/book if i can. The map was very handy just like how RJ says that site is. I was able to look at it all in one map without having to be online or go through many pages.

The book was i think a genealogy basics/starters book. It had the map showing all the usa states boundaries changes, and a map of usa aquistitions, plus it mentioned in it that USA chose English over German by only a couple of votes or percent. I thought someone might recognise the map description.

I can't believe that no one knows or has seen the book and/or map that i asked about in the original post. (Though topic has only been read 130 times.)

Found some more info of interest, but still not found the book/map i need that i asked help to find.

Thanks for that Aghadowey.
I wonder if that book may have the map that i am looking for in it? (It is obviously not the same book as the genealogy book though.) I wouldn't want to buy it to find out it doesn't though. (Side note: It says the book is by Gary Alden Smith, that is the first time i have seen someone else with the same name Alden as my high school friend.)

(I was recently thinking that 'Empire State' seemed maybe a strange name for New York. Even though they say it is because leading position in population, wealth, and commercial enterprise. Is it connected with British Empire, or Roman Empire??)

New York was New Netherland incl New Amsterdam. (Some have called it New Jerusalem.)

New Sweden incl New Stockholm was roughly New Jersey?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Sweden

I think that the same book with the map in it that i am looking for that i mentioned in original post said USA only chose English over German as national language by a few percent or few votes.
