Evening SS

Thank you for all your efforts......they are very much appreciated, especially as the family background for Edward BLAKEY is now well and helpfully documented.

Sadly, the Canada question remains unresolved........Nil desperandum ::) ::)

Evening SS,

His full birth details can be found on the England & Wales, Christening Index, 1530-1980 courtesy of Ancestry.

SS,

As far as I know Ellen DUXBURY was born in Hawes, North Riding Yorkshire, and she was named by Edward BLAKEY as his mother in his 1859 criminal records.

I have not found an 1861 Census Entry......believing possibly he had migrated to Canada.

Thank you, SS,

His parents were father, William BLAKEY (1806-1855), mother Ellen DUXBURY (1806-1873).

I believe the person you quoted was born in Rochdale??

Thank you for that information......it could so easily have been correct.   However, he married in Blackburn in 1866, his wife dying that same year, possibly as a result of child birth (son Arthur also died 1866).  He re-married in 1868, again in Blackburn, his second wife dying in 1896.   He married his third wife in 1898.

His "stay" in Canada could have been relatively short.

He was 61 when he died in 1904 and by then he had been married three times, all marriages taking place in the UK!!

Hello,

Something of a wild goose chase possibly.

This gentleman's obituary in 1904 states he spent part of his early life in Canada.   Certainly there are references to "BLAKEY" in Saskatchewan in the early 20th century which may be family related.   However, there is evidence of an Edward BLAKEY, aged 19, arriving in New York aboard the Margaret Evans on 07/08/1862 from England which may fit the profile of a young man destined for Canada.  I wonder ::) ???   He died in Blackburn 30/11/1904.

Could anyone help please with any Canadian references??

Thank You,

I think your reasonings, on the balance of probability, are correct and that the Army belief was as you suggest.

My narrative for William Thomas DOWNHAM can now be closed satisfactorily.

Thank you,

Thank you for that information, which leaves me in a quandary!!!

If a Roman Catholic priest performed the burial rites would this indicate the deceased was Roman Catholic or that a C of E Padre was not available??
