Derry (Londonderry) / Gortfoyle House in Londonderry
« on: Sunday 16 November 14 22:08 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have any information about the history of Gortfoyle House (108 Spencer Rd), specifically what it was being used for in the 1940s? It is my understanding that it housed several different entities over the years. My grandmother (since passed) listed this as her address in 1946 on her UK departure form. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My grandmother was born in Londonderry in 1923, she was also in an orphanage there until she was 9 at which time she was sent to Australia as part of the Fairbridge program

Any idea which home, Daniel079?  Being sent to another country at such a young age must have been very traumatizing for her!

Derry (Londonderry) / Look-up request: OMEROD/ORMEROD
« on: Wednesday 07 May 14 16:02 BST (UK)  »
My great grandmother Elizabeth Mason (b.1897) was married to Andrew Stewart (of which I already have documentation).  After his passing, she married a man with the last name of Omerod/Ormerod sometime after 1930.  I am looking for any information about this marriage, as well as any information of Elizabeth Omerod/Ormerod in her later years, including death, burial, etc.  I have looked for information extensively with no luck and have run out of ideas.  Thank you!

Derry (Londonderry) / Londonderry orphanages/girls' homes 1930s-early 1940s

I'm looking for information about an orphanage/Girls' home, possibly run by the Salvation Army, located in Londonderry in the 1930s and early 40s.  My grandmother (since passed) lived there from ages 12-17, at which point she aged out. She did not attend school while a resident and once told me that the girls had long days full of chores. My grandmother was permitted to still visit with her mother, albeit infrequently. It is possible that it was actually a state run facility for children who were taken away from their parents. I have been searching for this facility for quite awhile with no luck, including just a confirmation that there was such a place and its location, as well as any records that have survived. Thank you!

Hi advent! Thanks so much for your reply. The information you provided is all new to me and very helpful! I was looking in the 1911 census at the William Warden family in Lisfannon. I'm not extremely familiar with the Irish census, but the best I can tell is it is house 13 in Lisfannon, Fahan, North Donegal, in the electoral division of Buncrana? I'm not sure if this is the pertinent information or not.  I googled the golf club and got a great overview, absolutely gorgeous!!!! Do you remember the professor's first name by any chance? Thank you again for your help!

Sandra, how can I ever thank you enough for being so kind and giving of your time to help me search? Thank you, thank you, thank you! I hadn't logged in for a couple days and just saw your last several posts.  I'm sad to see that the Violet Greer lead did not pan out - but you have provided me with another lead in Robert Mason, as I recognize him from a census that I believe belongs to my Elizabeth Mason.  So yes, I do believe she was the one who witnessed the marriage!!!! Wow!! It is very hard to conduct searches from out of the country as it can get very expensive and confusing.  Now I will begin searching for more information on Robert, his wife and the other witness. As for the other marriage certificate you posted, I'm pretty sure that is the Rebecca and James I am looking for! I'm so happy. Your help is very much appreciated!

Thank you, Elwyn!  I'll check with them.  Reichs, your help has been invaluable.  I'm currently trying to see if I can make a connection between Ms. Greer and Stewarts in the area.  Can't thank you enough, if for nothing else, trying to help me figure out the mystery!!!!!  :)
