Hello Andy,

We too have CAMPBELL'S in Durness, see attached family tree. We think our lot come in from Fort William way and don't stay too long. But if there's anything that rings a bell, it would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Phil

P.S. we're particularly interested in the middle name of Anderson. Wasn't there a notorious Anderson in the area?

Can anyone help with this family:

"JEAN LOUIS FRANCOIS HEUZE" b18/6/1924 Rozel/Trinity/Jersey
Father "ERNEST JOHN HEUZE"
Mother "JOSPEHINE MARIE LE LERRE"

I have the birth record and possible 1911 census entries for the parents.

Thanks in advance,

Phil

Many thanks Monica,

Yes, we've picked up on the marriage in Durness and looked at the original through ScotlandsPeople. Interestingly she was a widow at 23 and we've found the previous marriage at 18!

We think the 1871 census has been mistranscribed. If you look at the original we think that it's two "households" with Duncan living on his own (we'd be interested in your opinion on this). Certainly the other Campbells don't seem to fit into the family, unless their nieces.

We looked for deaths but couldn't find any. As you probably know ScotlandsPeople doesn't have a very good search engine on the indexes and it gets expensive just "casting around"!

Our feeling is that Duncan would have probably died in Aberdeen, unless he went to stay with a family member for the last years of his life. You're right Peggy could have died before public registration - we hadn't thought of that. We'll have to do some local research for Aberdeen.

But the leads to Fort William are strong, so we still want to find some local contacts/expertise there to progress the family back.

Cheers Phil

Many thanks but we don't believe that these are "our" people. We have a good trace for them back through the censuses to Durness in 1841. They're in Aberdeen in 1851 & 1861 and it's there that they say that they come from Fort William. We like to follow them back, so we need help with OPR's for the Fort William area.

Thanks for trying for us.

Can anyone please help with a look up Duncan Campbells family, born in 1803 in
Fort William. We are interested in parents, siblings and a possible marriage to
Margaret "Peggy" McIntyre (also born in Fort William in 1810.

Any help greatfully received.

Andy,

Many thanks for your efforts.

Any idea why there are so many Campbells in Durness? I thought the Campbell heartlands were in the south west of Scotland. Also, where they involved in the Highland Clearances? If so, on what side?

Any help greatfully received.

Cheers,

Phil

Hello Andy,

Would you be so kind as to see if you can get any info on:

Duncan Campbell marries Margaret McIntyre 16/02/1833 Durness.

I have five children, one of which - Donald Campbell b1837 Durness, we believe is "ours"

Many thanks in advance,

Phil

Hello Ellen,

Many thanks for your efforts. Looks like I'm going to have to go there. I believe there is a research library in Wick. It will make a good holiday!

I can't find any Campbell from Durness in England in the 1861 census. Yes please for the monumental inscriptions - that would help a lot.

The Durness web site is very good!

Kind Regards,

Phil

P.S. How you don't mind but I'm going to post to the Sutherland board as well.

Hello Ellen,

We know that Donald Campbell in Reading from the 1881c is correct, we have the family forward from that in detail. My copy of the LDS data set shows his birth location as "Sunderland". However, if you look at the image page (mine comes from Ancestry.com) it shows "Sutherland". I thought this might have been an individual error, but when I look at people in Durness, some show Sunderland as well. Such as  "George Brydon U 9 M Durness, Sunderland, Durham, England"! So, I've concluded that this was some sort of general machine translation error. Maybe it's just my data set?

Donald Campbell marries in 1875 and gives his father as Duncan Campbell, a shoemaker from Scotland deceased. Donald Campbell is in the 1871 census for Reading, lodging as a drapers assistant. So he must have come down pre 1871.

Looking at the IGI for Donald Campbells with a father Duncan from Sutherland, gives me only the one hit that I reported before. Do you see this IGI entry as well? All the IGI christenings give Durness as the location. Ann Campbell is christened on 12th Nov 1838, so she would be about thirteen in the 1851 census and probably still at home (or maybe in service?). Do you have access to the 1841 census? Would it be any good to us?

What is an OPR disk?

Cheers,

Phil
