Derry (Londonderry) / Re: Duffy of Londonderry

Thank you so much for your prompt reply.

I understand your confusion.

My grandmother Esther Ferns married two brothers. James Duffy  (1879) married Esther (1875) in 1900. When he died  (1913) leaving her 7 months pregnant with four children, my grandfather John (1887) stepped in to help. They traveled over to the USA and married in 1914 in NYC.

I was able to find birth and baptism records showing my GG James and GG Mary having five children including my grandfather and his brother James mentioned above. That ties up nicely.

In researching at the Derry Cemetery, I found another James and Mary Duffy. He appears to have been born in 1827 and she in1825. Age wise and the fact that they are buried in a family plot suggests they are the parents of My GG James Duffy. I wish I could find records to show when they were married and who were their children.
Rootsireland.ie provided me with the fact that James was born in Donegal and died on May 5, 1891 at the age of 64. His address was listed as Nailors row. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Derry (Londonderry) / Duffy of Londonderry

I have members of my family in a plot of the Derry cemetery. It appears that James Duffy 1827-1891 and Mary Duffy 1825- 1900 were married. I think they were probably the parents of my great grandfather James Duffy. My great grandmother Mary is buried there in 1899. My great grandfather went on to Glasgow, Scotland and I lost track of him.
Sorry for rambling. My question is does anyone know how I can be sure that James and Mary from late 1800s are my great great grandparents?

I plan to make a trip to Ireland in July and I would like to have most of my info compiled.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Aghadowey, you have helped me this past year in finding my ancestors. I thank you so much. Now I have another request. My husband and I are coming to Ireland July,2016. We will be taking a cruise that begins in Dublin and ends in England. On July 18th, we will be docked in Belfast from 7 am till 8pm. How feasable would it be , time wise, to get to see my family plots in Derry and St Eugene's Catherdral where so many were married, baptized and buried? It would be great to stop in for additional genealogy help as well. Do you know of a reliable person that we can hire? At what cost? What is the most reasonable means of transportation? Also, do you think it would be wiser to come stay in Derry a day or two ahead of the cruise and then travel on to Dublin to begin it? I have so many questions and a limited budget.
Any advice you can give me is greatly appreciated.

I found my GG James Duffy living on the rock in Londonderry between 1885-1891. Is there a way to see who else was living there  with him?

Thank you so much Aghadowery! I am so close but I need more guidance.

I got all the way to the page that lists Skinners Alley and gives a link for different years. I chose 1884 - 1893. It took me to a list of Val12B/32/11A thru Val12B/32/11ZB.

I randomly picked Val12B/32/11B and found Londonderry, Skinners Alley. Page 160. What do I do with that info and will I find Skinners Alley in each of the other listings?

By the way, that particular book did not have page 160 in it.

I am back. I now know my great grandparents lived in Derry , Ireland in 1887. GG was Mary McQuigg who dies in 1889. I found my GG James Duffy at his sons's (James also)wedding in 1900 Glasgow Scotland. I am trying to find where my GG James Duffy lived after the death of his wife in Derry, Ireland in 1889. Did he marry again? When did he die? Did he move to Scotland?

Not sure how to use the griffiths valuation. He lived at Skinners Alley Derry in 1883 and last known address was 12 Rock, Derry in 1887. I've also found the address of 55 bridge Street

Can anyone say what townland and parish that may be?

Very interesting. I went on GRONI. Annie Duffy does not come up with a birthdate. bUT she does come up with a death cert. No parents listed but when I viewed the enhanced it showed James Duffy as father of deceased. Poor thing was 5 years old had the measles 8 days and bronchitis 3 days.

Hi Anne,
I feel for you with those last names. Now I understand why some people are at this for years.

I am going to try out GRONI now.

As for finding the kids under the name Quig, did you do this on rootsireland? I tried but I seem to keep needing to enter a date. .????

Hi Anne,

I think so too. I am working on getting the death certificate for James now. I had found James, Patrick, Mary Eliza and John.

I missed Annie. I go on rootsireland. How did you find her?
