Surrey / Benjamin House, Southwark, Surrey

A possible ancestor, William Deely, was made a freeman of the City of London around 1750, and his residence is listed as Benjamin House, Southwark. Anyone know how I can find out where this was?

I just found out that John Daly was a silversmith this week, so it pulls a lot of things together. I haven't connected the Mack's and the Daly's, but the name is familiar, I just can't remember why. Here is a good site showing there were Gilbert silversmiths in Dublin. I believe the Gray's were connected too.

Here is another good site. Search by silversmith and Gilbert and you will see three. My comment that the Gilbert's were silversmith's in London since the 1600s stems from a newspaper article that references a Charles Gilbert being charged for shortchanging a customer. Silversmith is a specialized field, so we are lucky from a research perspective. But, naturally, they also tended to be pawnbrokers, so its not unusual that there were disputes.

Here is a link to the work of John Daly, Dublin and likely India.

He is the brother of Richard Daly the actor and theatre manager.

Another brother, William, married an Ann Penelope Gilbert, and some of his children were silversmiths in London in the late 1700s.

The Gilberts were silversmiths in London since the 1600s.

I have in the past researched a Thompson family of mariners/shippers out of Liverpool. Cornelius Thompson was the big cheese and might be the brother of Alexander or William. After great riches, he/they fell into financial distress. Quite a number of newspaper articles available on him that I can forward.

Francis Courtney Wemyss wrote a gem of a book for those researching English and Irish actors who crossed the pond to America up to 1852

There is one Fawcett listed in the late 1700s, but no first name.

I have found actors difficult to find birth/marriage records for as they moved around a lot. A good newpaper subscription gets the best hits as their plays were advertised.

The good news is acting was a multi generational career and they frequently married other actors.

Travelling People / Re: Ward family Nottingham

I have a Thomas Ward in the theatre business, so moved around a lot.

Lots of well known Ward actors going back to 1700.

This Thomas Ward was born 1799 in Liverpool to William Ward and Elizabeth Griffiths. His father was a prosperous hatter. A hat shop. Thomas made his acting debut in Scotland around 1816. The three children I suspect are his were born in Ireland between 1835 and 1839. I think in the 1840s he took over the hatter shop but it didn't turn out well.

He went to Pennsylvania around 1849 and acted and managed various theatres. In the 1860s he had a travelling drama company in the western u.s. and British Columbia. Some of this info was obtained in the book by Francis Courtney Wemyss who gives a bio of many actors and manager in the early American stage. You can read this book online and search by name.
