Add - OP hasn't been online since 7 March 2022.

My apologies for failing to thank everyone for help with this.  2022 was a challenging year.  I did a bit of research in 2023, but not my Dyfed ancestry.

@Neale1961

With tremendous gratitude for your incredible assistance, I have to share Eliza Pearce Barfield, who was waiting for me to find her photo in Sydney.

Found the reply button!   ;)

@Neale1961

I can't thank you enough for all this.  I think the ancestors are shaking the tree on the Barfield side, so I must pay attention.  I hope your tremendous gift of clues will come back to you 1,000 times over!

Once again, you are amazing!  I have been stuck with Eliza in Bruton for decades because -- pre-Internet -- I only had microfilm of censuses and Parish Registers/BT's.  Nowadays, I don't have the skills you clearly have mastered.  This is amazing!

Harriet Barfield Griffin's brother, Henry, was my GGgrandfather.  I used the early version of the LDS IGI and purchased certificates to piece the family together and used to correspond with descendants in the US, UK, and AUS.

I worked (pre-Internet) for many years with the late Lawrence Barfield, a highly regarded archaeologist, who applied his academic prowess to the Barfield surname -- much like a one-name study, but he didn't collect modern references.  He thought, but never proved, that my William and his Samuel Barfield were brothers.  Lawrence's uncle, Owen Barfield, was the famous literary Inkling.  Lawrence's cousin, Julia, is the famous London architect.

But I digress -- sorry!  This is all so exciting because you've discovered things I likely never would have.

It makes perfect sense that this is my Eliza Barfield's family in Bruton.  The Islington/Shoreditch/East End Barfields were definitely forename-repeaters.  Once again, though, this was a somewhat large family that has few living descendants.

I'm off to notify them of your spectacular discovery!

Thank you so much again!  I investigated the Ancestry.com trees, but they weren't terribly informative.  I did send a message to one person.

I'm intrigued by their apparent ancestor, the famous photographer in Australia's history.

  • Helena Harriet "Lena" Griffin (b. ca. 1890), married Guy Beaufoy Merlin -- one identified daughter Joan Louisa Beaufoy-Merlin (b. 1919-1920) married Laurence John Davis in 1940 in Sydney Diocese.

Joan Louisa Beaufoy MERLIN - Married 15 June 1940 Neutral Bay Sydney to John Laurence DAVIS.
Joan died 2001 in Queensland.
DAVIS, Joan Louisa (Toni)
11 MAY 2001   Death (age 81) late of Coombabah, formerly of Newcastle.
Death Notice Gold Coast Bulletin 12 MAY 2001

In John Laurence DAVIS’ WW2 military service records there is the name of his first born son listed as a dependent. There were other children born later.

On Ancestry there a number of people with public trees for this family, which would provide you the opportunity to make contact.
There is also a link to a geneanet tree for this family and it includes the names of  3 sons and their offspring. I will send you a PM as living descendants cannot be named here.

The cause of death is so tragic.  Many of my ancestors' family members died as infants of marasmus in the South Wales valleys.

After all this effort on your part, I do hope I find relatives living in NSW.  I've written to the Lane Cove Library to ask about local historian contacts.  The Trove is a treasure!

Marvelous!  Thank you!  I need to learn more about the on-line NSW indices.

This is exciting!  Thank you!  Now to determine if she was "my" Winifred.  I found her at 1 Bellevue Avenue, Greenwich, in the 1943 Electoral Roll for Lane Cove. He was Postmaster.  I was unable to identify a method for searching by address to see who was at Winifred's Carlotta Street address in 1943 (another point in favor of confirmation).

Winnifred Patience GRIFFIN married 1942 in North Sydney to Richard EVANS

Winnifred Patience EVANS died 1978 NSW

Yes, she is yours. Her death record index gives correct names for parents.
