Hi Peter...The Azo stamp box featured on the reverse dates from 1902-1909. Great photo. The boys look to be around 11, 8 & 6 years old. The two men look like they could be staff.

Carol
Carol could this postcard have been printed in America?

Could the wooden box be an ammo box, there was an american company that made shotgun cartridges called Perfection

That's very interesting could this postcard have been printed in America?
Have just Googled Perfection Shotgun - Shattucks arms company Springfield (America) made hand guns and perfection shotguns 1880 to 1904.

I know a previous poster mentioned about the brick design in the building.  There is a similar style of bottom bricks and size of other bricks in this photo of salvation army building built in 1903.  I am not saying same building but style very similar and dates to when ur photo might have been taken

Thanks Creasegirl
There is a definite similarity there.

I have studied my ancestors on both my mothers and fathers side and so far not one family has had staff, they were frequently staff so I think that the two men being staff is highly unlikely.
Looking at the shape of the eyes of the children and the men I would say the two men were brothers and that one of them was the father of the boys.
Attached is a hi res scan of the man on the left's feet.

The Forum would not accept the whole photo at 1200dpi

I have scanned the photo at 1200 dpi here is the writing on the box PERFECTION

The reason I think it is Ireland - the lady looks very like a lady in a picture I have that I am sure was taken in Ireland. My father's mother married a McMath from Coleraine the lady could be a relative of her husband.
I think the picture is unusual because everything looks new but who would have a house built like that I look at the picture and think railway viaduct or barracks. I have never seen a front porch like that, it is as if they have made a building habitable that was never intended to be lived in.

This was post card was in a family album, the picture might have been taken in Ireland the setting is to me most unsual my first thought was military barracks or under a railway bridge.
Thanks in advance

The location, I think, is in the Silvertown area of Essex ... the date I'm a little less certain about, but probably turn of century depending upon whose son that is centrally in photo.

The two gentlemen are William and Hugh McMarth. Both sugar refiners at Lyle's at Plaistow Wharf, who lived at 9 & 11 Boxley St/Rd, North Woolwich, in 1901. They were two of the original workers at Lyle's photographed in 1892 outside the works (they look a little younger in that photo). Over time 4 generations of McMarths worked at Lyle's.
William McMarth was one of my Great Grandfathers his daughter Elizabeth was my Fathers mother my Father and I both worked at Tate&Lyles Plaistow wharf.
I wanted dating of this picture because none of the ladies or children in this picture resemble the wives and children of William and Hugh and I thought that the photo was much earlier. However from previous posts re this picture's age and the style of dress of the subjects it is probably late 1890s. I think this photo was taken in Ireland, a cousin has since told me that the she was told that the two men visited Ireland a number of times, the ladies in the picture have a strong likeness to the brothers it is possible that they may be mother and sisters with their own children.
All I have to do now is trace William and Hughs mother's records they were from Coleraine originally.
Thankyou all for your help
Peter Richards
