Antrim / Tickmacrevan/Glenarm Pre 1825 Catholic Records
« on: Wednesday 31 March 21 22:05 BST (UK)  »
The National Library of Ireland Website has Glenarm RC Parish records back to 1825, that I use frequently.

I just ran across a rootsweb page that says there are records going back to 1784. http://sites.rootsweb.com/~fianna/county/antrim/antrc.html

Does anyone know how to find the records from 1784 to 1825?

Down / Magill of Tullycairn and Gillhall
« on: Sunday 31 January 21 15:40 GMT (UK)  »
So, I have been researching some American Magill families, many of whom have trees that point to an origin at Tullycairn (Tullycarn townland, Donaghcloney Civil Parish). So, I am trying to research whether there were any Magills that stayed behind at Tullycairn. I did find a record of a Henry Magill, Esq. of Tullycairn who died in 1844. (The property then went to Robert Dickson, then to David Bennett, then James Bennett. James Bennett retired from farming and auctioned the property in 1926.) I am wondering who owned the property before Henry Magill, Esq, and what was his lineage.

Then, I stumble on records of another Co. Down estate called Gillhall that is associated with Magills. It is in Ballysallagh townland, Dromore Civil parish, which happens to be immediately adjacent to Tullycairn. There is a lot more information available about Gillhall. Apparently Captain John Magill obtained the property from the Magennis family in the 1660's. John Magill also owned Tullycairn. The property eventually transfered to the Meade family when Captain John's great granddaughter married the Earl of Clanwilliam. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodosia_Meade,_Countess_of_Clanwilliam

I read that the Earl of Clanwilliam ran into financial problems in the 1780's and started selling some of his properties. Perhaps this is when Tullycairn estate split off from Gillhall.

Does anyone have any information on these properties and Magill families?

I created a couple of pages on Wikitree about these properties.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Fr. John Magill and Fr. Daniel Magill, New Zealand
« on: Tuesday 08 September 20 00:40 BST (UK)  »
I just heard back from the "Ask a Librarian". I was told that were both noted to be serving in Australia.

After a few quick google searches, I found findagrave memorials for John (1972) and Dan (2010). I also found a nice transcript of Father Daniel's eulogy.

Thank you for all your help!

Minniehaha,
Thank you for the excellent information.

I saw the following on the web. I wonder if they would be listed in this directory. Or an earlier edition, as they might have been deceased prior to 1969.:

I am researching a family that came to New Zealand in the 1920s from County Antrim.

Daniel Magill (1869-1948)
Sarah McAllister (1890-1969)
and their 3 boys
Patrick (1816-1971)
Fr. John Magill (1918-?)
Fr. Daniel Magill (1922-?)

The parents and Patrick are buried in Matamata cemetery, as shown on findagrave.com.

Does anyone have any information on John and Daniel, who were both Catholic priests?

Perhaps someone has access to a directory of clergy, that might mention where they served.

I did find a 2007 death record online for a Father John Thomas Magill, but his calculated birth year (1930) is a little off, and his siblings names don't quite match.

Thank you.

Which records have "Esq."?

The 1856 Death notice/Obituary of his first wife Eliza called him Edward Fitzgerald, Esq., M.D. It appeared in papers in Massachusetts, Dublin, Belfast and Cork.

Also, there is a book called "A History of the Kingdom of Kerry" by Mary Frances Cusack, 1871, p. lxxii. Available on Google books. In the back of the book he is listed on a List of Subscribers as Edward Fitzgerald, Esq., MD.

I am curious if anyone has access to medical licensing records or medical school records or Massachusetts medical society records.

Specifically, I want to know the date and place that he completed medical school.

I think it was between 1850, when he arrived in the US (school teacher on citizenship papers), and 1855 when he is listed as a physician in Worcester census.
