The previous record of them at the school in 1891 showed the fees so I was surprised to see them still there in 1895 a year after they became orphans.

Thats a shame. Listed on the school record was Glossop Union. Am I correct in saying that was a workhouse?

Hello again, I just confirmed that my Great Grandfather did change his name from Cockayne (thanks Ancestry DNA!) so now I am trying to figure out what happened to him and his 2 brothers. After the murder / suicide 1895 William Henry Cockayne and his brother Walter are still at school at the Duke of Norfolk in Glossop but listed as living at the Glossop Union. Further on they and their brother Joshua ended up as servants/labourers in different parts of the country. Are there any records available that would show when they left the Union House and where they went. If not could anyone fill me in on how the system worked then. At what point could they leave of their own will etc. Thanks so much, Tara

The family then moved to Portsmouth and finally to Queensborough in Kent where they lived for the rest of their lives. Its really easy to trace them when they got married.

Oh my goodness - this is terrible! How do i find those newspaper articles - is there a website you use? You are all amazing though - what a fascinating find. This would certainly explain the name change and why he never wanted to talk about his family although a shame that the brothers didn't stay in touch. I wonder if my Great Grandmother knew ....

Interesting, perhaps, that Joshua Cockayne born 1888 is with a family named Hill in 1901, in Yorkshire.  The head, George Hill, is a farmer.

Gosh that is really interesting .... no sign of William there though? What is Joshuas status with that family?

Not sure about the name change .... Maybe sounded too Irish when he went to Middlesbrough? Not sure if that was even an issue at the time. I found Walter and William in school in 1895 listed as Orphans. Family lore says Grandma found a brother with a different surname who was a Doctor. I need to find out if that was Walter and also what happened to the rest of the family to make them orphans.
