United States of America / Grand Army of the Republic
« on: Wednesday 01 May 24 20:05 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I had two relatives who served in the Civil War, an uncle and nephew. I have the service records for both and pension record for the uncle, NARA  say there is no pension record for the nephew which was a surprise as his wife was a widow 58 years, 1887-1945.
NARA  information on pension records and advised to contact the state veterans association for applications from 1934 but they didn't keep anything but advised to contact The Grand Army of the Republic in Philadelphia. They do research but only for members and have sent an application form. The uncles obituary mentioned that the GAR had attended.
My question is, Has anybody paid for research by GAR, was it worthwhile and do they have anything that NARA don't have?  Thank you

Thank you, that's interesting that she never married. Collin was from Finchley, born in Blackpool so they got around. They would have met at university as they were affluent professional people unlike our branch of the family!
              Thanks & best wishes

Hello
Thank you for checking, he died in 2007 and his wife before him, I found their engagement announcement in Newcastle Journal in 1960 so the first marriage didn't happen.  Thank you

Hello
I found an engagement announcement in The Scotsman in January 1957 of Elspeth Wolstencroft to Colin Tinker in Edinburgh.
He married someone else in 1960, I am wondering if he had been divorced or maybe they broke up? Can I please ask if there is a listing for them?
Thank you

Thank you for that
They were born at  Royton, one census says Thornham which is Royton area.
I can find no marriage for them, maybe they married out of Lancashire as one census says former nurse and 1861 says blind 19 years.
