He was born George Henry Henderson Harwood, in 1858 in Demerara (British Guiana so I haven't been able to track his birth cert). I learnt that from census records, 1861 being the earliest when his mum, Frances Tighe, married William Harwood in 1860 (which means they must have come from Demerara to the UK between 1858 and 1860 but of course, his name wouldn't be Harwood then, but regardless, can't find either of them on any passenger lists).
1861 - littlehampton, Sussex
1871- Leominster, Sussex
1874- Merchant Apprenticeship, ship name Persia. Tied for 4 years
1881, Brighton, Sussex
1890-1891 London. Vessel name Salsette official number 91949 From date 24 Nov 1890 To date 28 Sep 1891 George Harwood; rank/rating, Able Seaman; year of birth, 1858; place of birth, Demerara; previous ship, Windsor Park official number 85132
1893 - marries Lucy Anne Howell, St Leonard, Bromley
He has 4 children, two of which are put in a poor home/workhouse and father is marked as deceased in before 1900. One could assume if he died, Lucy put them in a workhouse because the next census shows her working as a servant until the next census when she has remarried, relocated and has the kids again.
Thats as much as I found. I asked for help finding his birth cert on the Guyana board, but no one responded. Then I got sidetracked as I located my grandmother (she died when my Mum was only 9, so we didn't know anything, but I traced a photo to an orphanage and the archives sent me a 184 page file on my grandmother which was amazing! So I have been focused on that). Anyway, George was her grandfather (my great great grandfather). Would love any ideas on how to get through this brick wall!!! Ha!
