Well, the census snippet in Reply #8 shows the man's age as 35. Giving him a birth year of 1856.
Chester and Dukinfield are both in Cheshire. But if you feel the soldier I mentioned earlier isn't worth consideration that's up to you.

Are you related to the man with the medal? Do you know if he married or had children?

Just curious....is this person in your family tree? Or do you have his 1887 Jubilee medal and want to know more about him?

I can see a service record for a Matthew Walsh. Born 1855 in Dukinfield. Enlisted with the RA in 1878.
He enlisted at Sheffield. Discharged in 1900. Served off and on in India.

This soldier's next-of-kin are brothers Thomas and Anderson Walsh in Hollingwood, Manchester.

Do you have a marriage for him? Any ideas where and when he died?

What source has him with the RA in 1887?

Not seeing him in the 1901 census?  ???

Another possibility: Barrow isn't his real surname. He could've "adopted" it, particularly if he'd been in trouble prior to enlisting in the army. (His service record hasn't survived, probably because he didn't serve out his enlistment term).

I still think it's weird he was found "not guilty" -- when there was blood on his sleeve, etc.  ::)

Moving forward, I would take the "known" details about him (from census records) with a pinch of salt.
