I have been searching this topic seeking some enlightenment about the occupation "Brace Maker" as this is clearly listed as my gggg-grandfathers job in the 1871 census. Also, on his marriage certificate as his wife's occupation in 1887 (so it can't be strenuous - like the engineering required to make the Brace tool) while he is noted as a Leather Cutter by 1887. It is never referred to as "braces" maker. I wondered if it was something like a brace required for a dodgy leg or the like. Leather and metal contraptions. I'm still guessing.
