Would anyone know if there were any Orphanages/Childrens Homes in the Dundee area? Also what would the circumstances be for children being taken into one, apart from the obvious one of the parents dying. Anything would be great, thanks, Sorcha

I wonder if anyone could give me any info about Strathdon, my Grandmother was a domestic servant and on my mothers birth cert her address is listed as Scotsbank Strathdon. Does anyone know if there were any large houses in that area this was in 1941. Anything would be great thanks. Sorcha

Have just had a bit of a check. My Gran's birth cert states that her dad was a slinger in an ordnance works, this was in 1917. Her Uncles were a miner and i was right one did work on the railway however the one that was a miner had just died in 1911 and my GGGrandparents were up there at the funeral so
they too were on the census. Sorcha x
p.s. they moved back to Halifax by 1920

Thanks Vonnie, actually thinking about it i do seem to remember something about the railways. So did people who worked on them have to move around then? Sorcha

My Gran's family were all from Halifax in West Yorks. However she had two Uncles who moved up to Gateshead between 1901 and 1911 and her parents also moved up there around 1916 which resulted in my Gran being born there and her two young brothers dying there around this time. There seems no obvious explanation of why this would be and I just wondered if anyone could hazard any guesses as to why they would all have moved there. Also could anyone give me any background about what Gateshead would have been like around this time. Anything would be great, thanks Sorcha

Cheshire / Re: Treatment for Melancholia

I don t know if this will be any addition, but my GGrandmother was also admitted to the Winwick Asylum with melancholia and delusions. This was in 1922 and she was from Oldham. She had been transfered from the mental hospital in Oldham where she had spent a year. I don t know whether this means Winwick was a more acute institution. Hope this helps. Sorcha

Thanks for your reply, hmmm I know everyone knew that part of my family, especially the police, who called them the dirtiest set of tinkers they had ever had the misfortune to know! Apparently they were proffesional beggars amongst other things. Thanks again Sorcha x
