The Common Room / Re: Richard Gibson d.1872

Hi, I'm just researching a related family and saw your post.  Looks like the Thomas GIBSON of Benton Square b. circa 1829 was the son of the family I'm seeking!  That would be Richard GIBSON b. 1803 & first wife Ann (WANLESS). Richard is with his second wife in the 1851 census of Long Benton ... in the same locale in 1841, Richard is with children including son Thomas GIBSON age 17; along with another son Richard -- perhaps the "younger cousin" you mentioned?

For what it's worth, I'm trying to identify the Thomas HORN age 6, an "inmate" who was living with them in 1841.  In 1851 he seems to have been recorded as Thomas GIBSON age 17!  (I have him from 1861 onward as a HORN.)

That certainly was fast!  Thanks so much, Keyboard86!

*sigh* Another lesson learned in getting printouts of all pertinent census records, rather than relying on transcriptions!  I never gave a second glance to the guy named "Jas. Bakted" in the same place :-p

Anyone have an idea what type of establishment the Mermaid Inn was, circa 1851?

And why James, at age 10, wasn't with parents Thomas & Sarah in 1841?  (Unless it's a case of more poor transcribing!)

I appreciate the baptism note, BTW.

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / 1851 lookup for BAXTER in Guisbro
« on: Wednesday 03 August 11 00:58 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm looking for a James BAXTER b. circa 1830.  He married my 3xGreat-Grandma, Margaret (MILBURN or EMERSON) in August of 1851.  Then, his residence was "Guisbro" (as spelled on the certificate), and he was a sawyer, same occupation as his father, Thomas.

The 1851 census must have been taken before their marriage.  I think I found my Margaret, age 17, with a Wm. BOYES family in Guisbrough, sub-registration district Lofthouse.  (Got this from another source; unsure whether she was a servant or relative there.)

Can anyone locate 20/21-year-old James in 1851?  There's a Thomas BAXTER, sawyer, in Walsoken, Cambridgeshire (born in Walsoken, Norfolk), but no James among the family.  And the same family in 1841 doesn't have a James among their children, when he should be there at age 10/11 with the other kids.  (Unless the one who was transcribed as 11-year-old Thomas is actually "James"?)

Thank you for checking!

Did a quick search ... haven't read all the way through this (one of these posters might actually be yourself!).  If not, these folks may be able to help you out:

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: barnsley marriage - Firth

Not to highjack your thread, but I have a FIRTH connection I'll throw out, just in case we can make a connection.

My Charles Henry FIRTH was b. 1865 in Worsbrough.  He married my great-great-aunt, Agnes Stanier or Stoneyer (CROSSLAND) in Barnsley in 1887.  I have a copy of a newspaper clipping about their 50th wedding anniversary -- with lovely wee pictures :-)  It says Charles was born in Taylor Row ("now George Street"), Worsboro Dale.  The couple moved to Sheffield Road in Birdwell.  It doesn't name his parents, but he's living with a John & Emma in the 1881 census of Worsbrough.

Charles and Agnes had nine children, but as of the 1937 article, only five daughters and 1 son were living.  I want to track down the kids someday ... think one was named Maurice or Morris, and another was Ethel.  Some of Agnes' siblings came here to America -- I have info on some of them (as well as her ancestors).

Cheers,

Hi Noeline,

I was going to say, the first question is are we talking the 1700s or 1900s?  But I tried looking for the family on census returns, and they're in Washington County in 1900, 1910, and 1920!

I also see that others have addressed this question in your other topic, "Oliver Walker" -- please try those suggestions, then let us know precisely what you're looking for!  If you're trying to track down recent/living relatives, your best bet is messageboards like rootsweb/ancestry or genforum.  Also, drop a note to the county historical society:  www.wchspa.org

Cheers and good luck!

Now stop that!  There won’t be anything left for me to find  ;D

OK, I had a bit of that stuff but not all -- definitely not Jane et al in the 1851!  So thanks for that.  I do have a bunch more details on this whole CRAWFORD lot, including siblings of Robert Sr. (husband of Jane).

I also found Stephen & Sarah (MIDDLETON)-- plus kids George, Fred, and Walter to start with.

I don’t think Robert & Jane’s daughter Sarah was married to Mr. GOULDING.  I’ve got her wed to John LOWE -- another family on that original 1841 census page!  Also gathered nine of their kids; everything is fitting so well thus far … something must be wrong  ::)

As to sister Ann, yes, I think she married John MARSHALL.  I found their daughter Sarah Anne b. 1846, but no more yet; as he was a sailor, perhaps they moved out of the area.

Oh, then there’s the Robert on that 1841 census who we thought was probably a Jr.  I believe he was indeed a son of the elder Robert & Jane, and that he wed Elizabeth (BEECH).  I have seven kids listed for them; one of whom was a Sarah baptized in 1837 -- roughly the time of “wee Sarah” who was with George & Jane “CROWFORD.”  She wasn’t with dad Robert Jr. in 1851, so it may have been her who was with Grandma Jane in 1851.  I’ll have to check which Sarah was which, and with whom ...

I’ll be out of town for the next several days.  Next task will be to nail down Jane (SHARP) CRAWFORD and her brood in every possible census.

Have a good weekend!
~JL

PS: Thanks also for the Noah info … and even more for the potential data of Jane (HUNSLEY) -- tho I’m a wee bit too busy to start climbing that branch  :P
