Thanks, Shaun.  It pretty well puts an end to my hope of finding something in army records.

Thanks for your reply.  Caroline was christened in the parish church of Dorking, surrey.  "soldier" appears next to her father's name.  I presume he was a private.

No siblings for Caroline have come to light.

Hannah Syred appears in census records from 1861 to her death in 1892.  Always a " widow"

I've wondered if there was a failed immigration attempt, but nothing has turned up in those records.

Thanks for the info re: life in the barracks.

Hi Cath

Yes.  Per the census records of 1841 and 1851 Caroline Hannah Syred was raised by her maternal grandparents.

Herbert Syred and his wife Hannah are not in either the census of 1841 or 1851

Hannah Syred appears in the 1861 census recorded as a widow living with her father.

Herbert Syred presumably died between 1851 and 1861 but there is no civil record of his death.  Possibly he died while in the army in Ireland thus there is no civil record

Thanks, Jann

Thank you for your replies.  Yes, Herbert Syred was in the army.  That information appears on his daughter, Caroline Hannah Syred's, 1838 christening record .  Newry is definitely a possibility.  Maiden Stone, thanks for the links.

Another question:  Per census records Caroline Hannah was raised by her maternal grandparents.  Herbert, his wife Hannah, and the woman I believe is Herbert's mother do not appear in the 1840 or 1850 census.  Would Herbert have left his child in England and taken his mother to Ireland on a military deployment?

I know it's not possible to trace military records without knowing the soldier's regiment, but I'm interested in getting a general idea about what his life would have been like

Information and opinions welcomed!   Jann

Thanks to all who responded.  I've been researching Herbert Syred for 10+ years.  Problem: he appears in no census, civil registration, ship's list etc.  The only likely church record is a baptism in 1818 in Brandeston Suffolk.  Mother: Sarah Syred.  Other than that he appears only on his daughter's records.  Sarah Syred and Hannah Carpenter Syred are not in the 1840 or 1850 census records but both appear in 1860.  Hannah is a widow living with her father.

Yesterday I received information ,via family history (a note inside the cover of a book), that Herbert died at a military barracks in Ireland probably around 1850.  While checking into that I discovered this totally "new" Herbert Ward Syred!

I welcome any suggestions.  Jann

Hi,

I hope someone on this thread can answer my question:  when a British soldier died at a barracks in Ireland @1850 what was done with the body?

Also has anyone heard of Wenery, (maybe wenersy or winersy, etc.) Barracks?

Any help appreciated.  thanks, Jann

Hi,

Per an online tree, Herbert Ward Syred was born @1808 in Norton, Surrey.  I can't find him or Norton Surrey.

Any help appreciated.  thanks,  Jann

Hi,

Per family history, Herbert Ward Syred died at Nenery (possibly Wenery, Winery, etc.) Barracks, Ireland  @1850.

I'd appreciate any information about this place and information about the burial of British soldiers in Ireland at that time.

Thanks, Jann
