Update: Mark got back to me and said he could find no record of my grandfather. So, I'm thinking he was in the Palestine Police rather than a military policeman.
I've ordered a birth certificate search from GROS too.... *crosses fingers*

Nice one. So it looks like it is "Kincham" and not "Kineham". Brilliant!  ;D

Found a link to the Palestine Police Old Comrades Association:

http://www.wyevalley.worldonline.co.uk/

It has an address to write to for enquiries, and a link to a Police Reunited website.

They weren't married and my mother was put up for adoption. My grandmother was grieving at the time  and her grandmother (who was illegitimate too) forced her to give my mother up.

Good point about the birth certificate: I don't know whether we have that in her birth name as well as her adopted name. I know the GRO ref for it. I'll have to ask her tonight... delicatley!

Thanks for your help,

John

Yes, I'm not 100% sure of anything!  ??? He is my mother's father and my grandmother was in a bit of a state when she signed "a" document with his name on, since he was thought to have been killed.

On a document of my mothers it could possibly be Bradie and not Brodie, but that may just be the handwriting. I will contact the GRO soon and ask about a birth certificate. I do most of my research at work - in my "I'm REALLY bored time" - and my office is next to the MD's so I have to be careful... :-X

I have found a marriage of a James Murray Brodie to a Jemima Mary Anderson in Pollockshields, Glasgow on 7 Jun 1916 and they were living at 30 Finart Street, Greenock, Scotland. This may be his parents (its a start). I have not found a marriage of a Bradie to an Anderson.

Back to my original question: his death cert will be held by the GRO in Scotland?

Ah good idea, silly me, thank-you.

I had a look and found a "Kinchim Lodge" in coldstream with what is most likely his father there. This is by "Hirsel House" with an Earl of sorts living there. Hirsel House is still there, looks very nice!

If you go to a mapsite and zoom down to 1:25,000 you can see Hirsel Country Park about 1/4mile northwest of Coldstream. You can zoom right in on an aerial photo on maps dot live dot c0m, but I couln't find the lodge.

Armed Forces / Question about Deaths
« on: Thursday 08 March 07 12:42 GMT (UK)  »
If my grandfather died in 1946/47 in Palestine, where would his death be recorded? Do people who die during conflict get put on the usual death-index? Given that he was Scots, would I have to go to the GRO for Scotland?

I read some articles online about Palestine and their seems to be the possibility that the numbers of british dead there aren't even known accurately.

He was a miltary policeman in Palestine, b.1918 Glasgow. He served in the regular army and was a Sgt Major, Airborne division; Wounded at Arnhem & POW. I don't have his service number or anything concrete yet. My mother wrote for his service records but they couldn't find any. His name was either Philip Anderson Brodie or Bradie. I don't know whether his middle name and surname were hyphenated or not. We haven't had the chance to go to Kew yet (maybe in a decade or two!).

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

The link above is "broken" and is now:
http://www.pegasusarchive.org/

Then click on "Prisoners of War".

On the site the webmaster offers to look up the details of any POW's in his books!!! I've emailed him about my (mysterious) grandfather was was also captured at Arnhem. He was a Sgt Major, Airborne division and then a military policeman in Palestine where he died in 1946 and never saw my mother. But, I've yet to find any record of him apart from his name on one document of my mothers. I'm not sure whether his name was Philip Anderson Brodie or Bradie (b.1918 Glasgow).

This has really helped me find it too as for some time I've been trying to work out where this was! My aunts gave me a Kerr family tree many years ago with "Friars Burn Mill Kineham" as place of birth for Isobel Forsythe.
My question is: where's "Kineham"? I've goOOogled Kineham and found a reference to "Kineham Lodge Coldstream Scotland" but I'd like to know where exactly this is?
BTW I've ordered the marriage extract for an "Andrew Carr" and Isobel Forsythe for the 13/04/1792, Coldingham.
Regards
John
